Is the cochineal red retro? I remember someone on KZfaq had the same set and it had that carmine on it.
@briwidmerart18 сағат бұрын
The cochineal red was re-released as a tube with the retro packaging at the same time as this set, but sold separately. There's also the slightly thicker jewel box set that has a water tank built in for painting on the go, which comes with a more traditional split primary. I think Carmine is in that one.

I do want to make a note about zoos/aquariums- not all are like seaworld. Many, like the San Diego Zoo, have set THE standard for how to do animal conservation and wildlife preservation- and if the Georgia aquarium's mission is to teach / help us understand how to care for our wildlife- they should be supported. Do your research on accreditations for zoos/aquariums and go support the ones that care! I see this rhetoric a lot online and find it puzzling as ethical zoos/aquariums are some of the only educated voices our wildlife has.
@briwidmerart5 күн бұрын
Very fair! The Georgia Aquarium is accredited and works in research, teaching, and conservation. I just still feel bad for such a large mammal to be so far inland, but I'm sure they would release them if they felt they would handle it well. Generally I'm pretty good about defending zoos because my local one does so much rehab/release and also breeding/releasing of endangered species. They just released a 375lb loggerhead turtle they helped 🥰 Sea World (Florida) also does rehab and release work, especially for manatees. Unfortunately not all of their animals have that freedom to be sent home 😞 So yes, you're absolutely correct and I appreciate you responding.

😅 I feel you! I’ve got too much paint, too, but I couldn’t resist that set either. I wish they had replaced the Yellow Ochre with a cool red like Alizarin Crimson, or Rose Madder, or even their new Chochenille red. The Raw Umber is my favourite for painting blond hair. It’s a little more transparent and less yellow than the Ochres. Love your watercolour so much, it turned out very pretty. I especially liked the way you painted the shirt.
@briwidmerart5 күн бұрын
Thank you so much! Okay, I am absolutely going to try the Raw Umber for hair - appreciate the suggestion! But yes, alizarin crimson (despite it's fugitive nature) is one of my absolute favorite colors so I agree.

Hey, it's just awesome you were able to do this despite the lack of energy or desire to paint. I was going to suggest attempting a glaze over the sky until you said you were completely over it. 😆 Good luck with the large-scale piece. Perhaps just start a bit at a time when you can/ feel up to it, so it doesn't feel overwhelming? Or, if you're set on the alla prima method, do a loose test run just to see how you feel with the scale? Good work on this one!

@briwidmerart2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! Most of the background is Venetian Red + Ultramarine Intense, which is both purple-y and granulating.. and then added some Shadow Grey to the second mix. Shadow Violet is super pretty and I may replace Shadow Grey with it in the future.

I love Daniel Smith! Still slowly building up my palette, I have about 38 colors-trying to reach 48 to fill my palette. Also, you can still use your greens!Just tone them down with a complementary color or neutral tint. It is always easy to tone colors down, but it is harder to mix vibrant, punchy colors.
@briwidmerart3 ай бұрын
Just curious - do you have a favorite Daniel Smith paint? It is definitely harder to mix those full saturation colors but I just tend to never use full saturation greens. I should challenge myself to a painting that does that, though. I generally mix my own with smaller palettes.

Gouache...main issues are blending smoothly nd layering
@briwidmerart3 ай бұрын
Gouache can be so tricky with the dry shift and reactivation. I've gotten better since way back here, but using a soft brush and working more water to more gouache (transparent to opaque) help me a lot with both layering and blending.

Ah I love the springy colours in this! You are SO right about DS Ultramarine, mine also dries into a rock. When I need to refill it, I'm going to try mixing some glycerin in to see if that helps it rewet better. And yeah, DS Indanthrone s soooo sad. I wish I'd never bought mine. Regrets. I have to admit being astounded that you ran out of Quin Rose and never rebought it, but I'm addicted to Quin Rose and it's frequently the cold red I reach for the most... and you have Alizarin Crimson for that. It just threw me for a loop, haha!
@briwidmerart3 ай бұрын
Thank you! I should've bought glycerin years ago when you first mentioned it. I only had a 5mL tube of both Quin Rose and Alizarin Crimson. I think there might be a dot of Alizarin Crimson left in the tube. They run out far faster. I bought the wrong colors in 15mL 😆 DS makes stunning cool reds.

What is the point? I've been keeping diaries for over 20 years and recording my life is what matters to me and may one day matter to someone else, but what's your intention....just show off with fancy fountain pens and different coloured ink? What you're doing won't make any difference to the world.
@briwidmerart4 ай бұрын
I am truly sorry if you sincerely believe that the only things one should do are things you anticipate making a difference in the world. Some things are just done for simple enjoyment and sharing those things helps to form connections with others. I appreciate my friends in the fountain pen and art communities. I also love reviewing my ink journal to find the perfect inks for my next refill and I have had friends flip through it and pick inks from my collection that they would like to sample. Simple pleasures and creative outlets are worth pursuing.
