I really agree with your colour suggestions - I'm sat here typing this in a burgundy pull-over and lovat trousers! I really liked the tattersall lining of your wax jacket - that was a lovely little detail worth mentioning, I think. A couple of things I think you missed out on (if I may be so bold). Firstly, the prevalence of checked shirts, be they gingham, tattersall or whatever. Solids work fine in the country look, but I find check shirts work really well, especially with knitwear and/or tweed. Obviously you have to balance your textures a bit, but they're a great casual option. I also have a big preference for moleskin jeans over denim. I find they resist the wet better, and are harder wearing than corduroys in the cooler months. Plus, they differentiate you from the other 99.9% of the population without appearing eccentric (in my view). I also wonder if knitted ties are worth a mention. I appreciate they have become much more popular in recent years, but I was wearing them decades ago before they became fashionable! They have a lovely texture that works well with all the woollens and tweeds we tend to go for. A final mention for the inherent sprezzatura of a well-worn wax jacket. If I ever feel I look too well put together, I just throw the wax jacket on for instant shabbification!

Hi there, Thank you for your thoughtful response! I'm glad you liked the colour suggestions and the tattersall lining detail on the wax jacket. It’s always great to hear that others appreciate the small touches. You bring up some excellent points. Checked shirts, whether gingham, tattersall, or others, indeed add a wonderful dimension to the country look. They pair exceptionally well with knitwear and tweed, providing that perfect blend of casual sophistication. I’ll definitely consider emphasizing them more in future discussions. Moleskin jeans are a fantastic suggestion too. Their durability and water resistance make them a practical yet stylish alternative to denim, especially in cooler weather. I hadn’t thought of them in that context, so thank you for that insight. Knitted ties are another great addition. Their texture and versatility make them a perfect match for woollens and tweeds. It’s interesting to hear that you've been ahead of the trend on that one! And yes, the charm of a well-worn wax jacket can’t be overstated. It’s the perfect piece for adding a bit of rugged character to any outfit. Thanks again for your input. It’s contributions like yours that make these discussions so enriching ☺☺

I'm suspicious of wearing wool in the country because of moths (except in the winter). Don't they just land on you and lay eggs? What is their life cycle? Is this a needless concern?
@TheBritishDapper
@TheBritishDapper 15 сағат бұрын
Hi Stephen, a great question where are concerned, but in general if you follow these points the risk of infestation is vastly reduced. Moths may take between six months and one year to mature, they reproduce as soon as they emerge from eggs (cocoons) as adults. It is when they emerge from the cocoons the risk of them eating your cloths is at it greatest. Whilst moths could land on you when out and lay their eggs (cocoons) , it is rare and if you use a clothes brush and brush your jacket down before returning it to your closet (wardrobe). Moths prefer dirty, sweaty, or food-stained wool, so if you keep them clean you can further reduce the risk. You can then use protective moth proof garment zip clothes bags and you can additionally use natural moth repellents like cedar blocks or lavender sachets. I use cedar tree oil and spray the back wall or floor of your wardrobe, or if you are putting jumpers (sweaters) in draws spray the inside of the casket. Doing these 3 simple things should significantly reduce the risk, the irony is that the risk of moth infestation in wardrobes tends to be more prominent in towns or cities than in the countryside. Hope this answers your question and don't let this put you off buying or wearing woollen items (jackets, suits or jumpers (sweaters)).👍🙂

Hi Mike, Corduroys are great to wear as are Cavalry twill trousers. generally 8 wale (thicker) corduroys are more winter wear and 11 wale (thinner) is for more warmer wear, and you are correct they both go so well with hacking/tweed jackets. Just an observation from personal experience for others reading this, avoid wearing darker colours in the hot weather. In the cooler months I also wear Moleskin trousers👍🙂

For a casual look, I would tend to go: Footwear - chukka boots or derby boots, depending on the setting, trousers - chinos or moleskin jeans (denim ist verboten), top - oxford or linen shirts and/or classy knitwear, jacket - harrington or bomber jackets. I spend most of my time in a rural environment, so wax jackets are a staple (barn/chore jackets also work), as are commando-soled tan derby boots (brogue or not are both fine), checked/tattersall shirts are great, but solids also work, maybe plaid for the cooler months. Good quality knitwear can work even on relatively warm days - a thin merino jumper is far classier than a cotton t-shirt imho.
@TheBritishDapper
@TheBritishDapper 6 күн бұрын
Hi there, you describe some great items and looks, but although you class denim (jeans) as verboten, that is not the case for all - so I wouldn't rule them out. But I would dress them up with decent footwear, shirts and jackets to raise the bar a little. Your more winter look is also a great combination👍🙂
@TheBritishDapper
@TheBritishDapper 6 күн бұрын
It sounds like you have a well thought out and versatile wardrobe that fits both casual and rural settings. I really appreciate how you balance functionality with style. Here are a few additional suggestions that might complement your preferences: Footwear: In addition to chukka and derby boots, you might consider adding a pair of Chelsea boots. They offer a sleek look that can transition well between casual and slightly more formal settings. Trousers: Besides chinos and moleskin jeans, you might like corduroy trousers for their texture and warmth, especially in cooler months. They're a bit more rugged than chinos but still offer a stylish look. Tops: For your oxford and linen shirts, you could try incorporating some casual button-down shirts with subtle patterns or prints. They can add a bit of variety while still maintaining a polished look. Also, consider layering with a lightweight vest for added warmth and style. Jackets: Your choice of Harrington and bomber jackets is spot-on. You might also like a quilted jacket for its classic style and practicality in rural environments. For a bit more formality, a peacoat could be a good addition. Rural Environment Staples: Wax jackets and barn/chore jackets are excellent choices. You could also explore tweed jackets for their durability and timeless style. They're especially great for layering in cooler weather and easily purchased at a low cost on Gumtree or vinted . Knitwear: Thin merino jumpers are indeed a classy choice. You could also look into cashmere sweaters for a touch of luxury and warmth. For layering, a shawl collar cardigan can add a stylish and cosy element to your outfit. Shirts: Checked/tattersall and solid shirts are excellent staples. For variety, you might enjoy flannel shirts in cooler months for their warmth and comfort, while still maintaining a rugged look. Your approach to dressing is both practical and stylish, perfectly suited to your environment. These additional items might help you diversify your wardrobe while staying true to your aesthetic. Glad you enjoyed the video and found it inspirational 👍🙂

On a country cap.- I have seen a photo of a group of men, on an Estate that was owned by one branch of my ancestors. They were, as written on the photo "Otter Hunting" with dogs. The picture was from the early 1900s. The caps they were wearing, to me, looked more like What we now call "newsboy" caps rather than "flat caps". They were wearing plus 4s or 2s and tweed. I imagine they were the keepers etc rather than the land owners as they tended to wear breeches when hunting/shooting.
@TheBritishDapper
@TheBritishDapper 8 күн бұрын
Hi Emlee, Thanks for your comment and you are correct in your observations. It was very common for estates owners to get there game keepers to cull the number of otters, as they affected the fish numbers for fishing on certain stretches of a river. Your description sounds like the type of clothes that would be worn back in those days and the baker boy hat (New boy) hat was very common for the working class to wear in those days, flat caps were more commonly worn by the gentry. Something else to consider, is that many estates had their own tweed design (pattern), which was unique to a particular estate. plus 2's or 4's wear very common in that period as well when shooting and fishing, and common for both gentry as well as commoners 👍🙂

Have you ever thought about wearing a TIE PIN? I don't mean tie clasps but pins with a pearl mounted on them, a precious/semiprecious stone or with some kind of ornament? I grew up with them as simply everyone in my family wore/wears them. All you have to do is to insert the pin at the front of your tie and secure it with a little safety lock at the back so you don't lose it. In the course of years I have amassed some 30 or 40 of them but they are surprisingly cheap as they are not so sought after. And even with some kind of cheap metal ornament (animals, shields, initials, flowers) they really stand out and transform even a boring or nondescript tie into a real eyecatcher.

Hi Adrian, glad you enjoyed the video and I have worn tie pins, I did have one with a pearl mounted on it, but a lass no more, I did have some in rose gold, as well as yellow gold, some with semiprecious stones, I had about 12-13 in total and wore them frequently in the 80's, 90's until the mid 00's. then sold them, all but one, which I still have now, which is more for sentimental reasons, given to me by my grandfather and if memory serves it was the first one I had and still use occasionally. I are quite correct they are relatively inexpensive, nowadays to pick up. Unfortunately a lot of the are now striped and scraped for their stones of gold, which is then melted down with other scrap gold. It's great to hear your family still wears them, I really should get some to replace the ones it got rid of. I don't tend to wear a tie pin or clip for the tie videos as it makes it awkward to do the video's, thanks for your comments and for reminding me about the humble yet fantastic look of a tie pin.👍🙂

Your grandfather sounds like he had a great sense of style and some strong opinions on trousers. The idea of side adjusters instead of a belt is quite classic and sophisticated. Even if he never wore bespoke, it's wonderful that he aimed for that polished image. People from that era really knew how to dress with elegance.👍🙂

I tend to pinch the tie in am M shape as I tighten the knot and it seems to work for me most times, but I have learnt with every tie knot if it doesn't work first time then don't continue struggling with it - start again from scratch, there is a difference between finessing the finish and rework and I have found with rework the knot never ends up looking sharp and the tie ends up being stretched or miss shaped 🙂 I'll add in in a video at some point in the future👍🙂

Hi there, the tipped tie is actually tipped with same fabric (rather than a contrasting fabric) and the untipped one is showing the back of the printed fabric as the outer fabric used in the tie. The image is correct👍🙂

Hello Chris. Great advice. I love side adjusters but they are hard to find here in the US. I also like and wear braces / suspenders. My grandfather called them galluses . They seem to be more comfortable than a belt. Great looking tie and pocket square combo today my friend. Thanks for the information on the ties. I didn't know that about the lining. I too wear a lot of brown brogues. Very best regards Ron

Hi Ron, glad you enjoyed the video and found it useful. I'm surprised side adjusters are difficult to find in the US. I'm glad you enjoy wearing braces (suspenders) and it is great to hear the Scottish term 'galluses' being used for braces. I agree, not a bad combination with the tie and pocket square and you learnt something new sartorially about tipped and untipped ties. Great to hear from you again Ron and for your continued support for the channel👍🙂

As always a great video.Btw I'm a slim ,sporty man in my 40s and I almost exclusively wear braces or side adjusters.I just prefer them as I feel the belt cuts your body in two especially when wearing a suit.

Glad you enjoyed the video and its great to hear you are invested in the use of braces and side adjusters. the trousers tend to hang at the right length better👍🙂

Sorry but the black brogue shoe you show at 23:01 shouldn't at all be mirror-shined. Just a hint of shine befits a brogue. A most watchable video, btw

Glad you enjoyed the video, personally I like many other ex-military like to see a person wearing a bulled (mirror shined) pair of leather shoes, many people aspire to getting that finish sartorially. Each to their own I guess, but thanks for sharing your personal views with us on this subject👍🙂

@@TheBritishDapper Oh, all my toecap Oxfords are finished spit-shined and like mirrors; it's just my Friday brogues that I leave without too much elbow-greasing :)

Shoes, socks, braces, caps. It's a minefield out there Chris. My only rules, if you could call them rules, is (1) don't wear the same material with two different patterns as they will clash. (2) if you wear light colours in a suit wear darker accessories, darker siuts with lighter accessories. I know one can be more adventurous, but unless one really knows what they are doing, err on the conservative side. Thanks again Chris for your efforts to explain the inexplicable. I doubt if I could pull it off. I just work on a hunch if something looks together or if something looks incongruous.

Hi Billy, glad you enjoyed the video, it sounds like you found your own way of creating ensembles. Thank you for sharing your rules-it's always great to get some tips and suggestions from others. I completely agree that matching patterns and colours can be a bit of a minefield. Your rules about avoiding clashing patterns and balancing light and dark colours in a suit makes a lot of sense. I appreciate your encouragement, and I think your advice will definitely help guide others. I try to keep it conservative unless I'm feeling particularly adventurous! And honestly, I think trusting your instincts about what looks good or incongruous is a smart approach. Sometimes a hunch is all you need to pull off a great look. Thanks again for the tips and your continued support for the channel👍🙂
