I adore both Chris Poland and Marty Friedman. They are both guitar gods. They are equally talented, yet so drastically different in styles. Marty DID later admit he had some difficulty playing Chris’ solos from the first two albums. I mean, he did a good enough job playing them live, but he didn’t QUITE replicate what Chris had done on the albums. This was most apparent when Marty had to play the first solo of “Good Mourning/Black Friday”; he just didn’t quite accomplish the same feel. It was like Marty was trying to rush through the solo and just get it over with. In an interview with a guitar magazine in 1991, Marty said his favorite Megadeth songs from the first three albums to play live were ones where he didn’t have to play any other guys’ solos, citing “The Conjuring”, “Mechanix”, and “The Skull Beneath The Skin”.

Chris and Gar made megadeth unique back then. Chops so good it even checks the status quo at the time for guitar, Van Halen and Rhoads. This caliber of player in your underground thrash metal band lol. Chris Poland doesn’t get nearly enough respect, he’s one of the greats. Hopefully time will show that.

Didn't think I'd ever see Friedman saying this about Poland. Plus Young's leads were very different to Mustaine's. I still prefer Friedman to both of them though, by a long way. I guess he was just young and trying to make his mark.

Do beaters make that much of a difference, most of these metal beats using triggers and tiny little drum beaters from what I hear. So if your learning double bass pedal, you might hear a less accurate or the same punch as you hear in recordings.

This is how you know that Menza's camp and management recently were completly and uterly full of shit when they were pissed at how the Rust In Peace biography depicted Nick as someone who didn't blast Chuck on his back. This is just a bit of the interview, but the whole video of this vault is out there and there is a part where Nick says, in this same fucking sitting, that he almost blew his chances of joining the band because of how annoyingly persistent he was with Dave about "firing this fatass" and to let him in.

Poland's first solo album, Return to Metalopolis, kicks major ass, and in a lot of ways feels like a lost Megadeth instrumental album from the mid-80s. His playing is both so tasty and very kick ass, he's one of my favorite guitarists ever

Mr. Mustaine was smart to recruit young, undiscovered talent who could play at a much higher level than he and keep it going with high-turnover, which cleverly would keep [his] profit margins up. The rationale makes him for a shrewd-ish businessman and tho that is why Megadeth and Metallica are two bands that are comparatively different. Megadeth personnel are cherry picked and are not guaranteed a permanent gig. Other bands keep who they’ve got - unforeseen departure, illness or death notwithstanding

Nick: Rock Solid and powerful Gar: Wild, frantic and creative I think both were the perfect fit for their respective eras. Gar fit the wild early years, Nick fit the more Controlled Songs better. I preger Gar, but what we can all agree in is that These two we're never surpassed by anyone WHO came later on

If Chris Poland only had a 'Tornado of Souls' moment. Most of his solos are short. I first discovered Marty Friedman, and I was so amazed by his playing. But when I listened to the earlier Megadeth stuff, PSBWB in particular, I was blown away by Chris Poland's playing. He has a very distinctive tone, he plays so fast, and one thing that stands to me the most was he was playing so fast without being sloppy. He plays it so clean. I love Marty Friedman, but I love Chris Poland better.
