03:00 another fab player, who I never tire of watching - Chris Hopkins :) Sometimes Phil and Chris do duet pieces together, that's a whole new level of playing and enjoyment.

This organ at the Tower Ballroom actually has a whole mechaincal/ electrical orchestra under the floor.Every stop and key opens and closes electrical supply to mechanically play the instruments below.Incredible engineering considering its age and technollogy when it was installed.

It sounds this way because it's a theater organ, made for silent movie theaters and designed to replicate the sound of an orchestra through specially designed pipes and tremulant boxes. You are correct in the organ's method of operation, although the pipes are located in various places to project sound and create surround sound

Start tempo = 200 BPM. Middle tempo = 200 BPM. End tempo= 200 BPM!!! Unbelievable. A human metronome!! Even with this ‘tricks’ of shuffling manuals. Phil was just incredible. And a heck of a nice fella too. I met him whilst doing a summer season at the BTB, and he was so helpful and personable. A sign of not just a true great, but a legend!

When I think back to when they announced a new organist at the Tower to replace Ernest Broadbent, I first thought after hearing him Phil Kelsall ,I don't think he will last? He was then playing an ABBA medley ,and forty odd years later, the said organist is still there and still likes to play an ABBA medley! Phil was definitely the man for the job,I wonder who will try to fill his shoes when he hands over the console??

Always great to hear those famous pipes kick in? I wonder does keith Ledson still look after this organs maintenance? Met him once and he said it was totally an honour to be associated with the instrument!

This organ was a good purchase for the owners past and present of the Tower complex! And probably only exists today for the efforts of Reg Dixon, Ernest Broadbent and of course Phil Kelsall who put it through daily workouts? I guess i should have mentioned Ena Baga as well as she played at the Tower for the five war years! All should be commended for their craft!

I have never heard Phil Kelsall play in person but have all his recordings fromm 1977 to the end ,what a pity you can get the annual cds nowadays! I guess its all about cost? The resident organist on my last visit was Ernest Broadbent, so thats forty plus years ago! Reg Dixon would have put in forty five years at the Tower but he went into war service in the RAF so i believe Ena Baga took his job at the Tower Wurlitzer!

Cost and demand. That said, I'm pretty sure if the likes of the Tower organists and Robert Wolfe, and the chaps at Organstop Pizza were to be broadcasting live on KZfaq a couple of times a week, there would be a fair number of people tuning in to watch.

Chris played this for my parents wedding anniversary in Blackpool Tower ballroom, they danced the Ennerdale waltz around the ballroom, once on their own then everyone else joined in. He made a copy on C.D. for them. I listen to this often, it's beautiful.

@@wersiorgan I like the key tapping actually, it adds a level of character to the performance, great to see his hands going so crazy on the keys and him leaning into the organ putting his all in to whatever he's playing, pedals an all. I listen to this regularly and watch him furiously playing that first song with feeling and it comes through in the sound.

Lovely video from the changeover, the organist and the dancing. As a kid in the 60s and early 70s my parents always took me on holiday once a year during the school summer holidays. We alternated between Blackpool and Scarborough quite a bit but I always preferred Blackpool, lots to do and many shows to see at theatres. I remember going to the tower circus but I can't ever recall visiting the tower ballroom unfortunately, maybe we did, maybe we didn't, but I have no memory of it. I would have loved to have gone and even now, but I doubt I ever will now. Also, it's lovely to see pairs of guys dancing together here, one pair look very good.
