Wow Rupert, that brings back memories! Actually the one you probably remember was a Kingston Trio song “El Matsdor” .. It ended very suddenly. In the gap dead silence before the roar of applause in my ears, I was terrified out of my wits. I think the relief that I hadn’t blown it was the reason I decided to sing for a living. There is an English version of Stillerivierstroom Silent River .. which is actually the original .. but this is the first time I’ve ever recorded it .. some 60 years later 😉

I know one year my brother Mike and I sang Memories are made of this [Dean Martin song] and maybe Tom Dooley, but Where have all the flowers gone was a bit later .. don't think I knew the song then. Memory is tricky at this age .. could be wrong. 🙃

Then maybe Tom Dooley. I remember meeting your Dad Lance,as an elderly gentleman in the mid 1970s.He used to go horse riding with Rosie Lewis, wife of Neville, the portrait painter.

I loved this - I'm a bird lover! But I would have liked a little more info about what we were looking at, their names, (like the big black bird that was an invader), and if they are generally still around in such huge numbers. The flamingoes and pelicans are spectacular!

Ja .. I'm no expert .. and there are so many others who know their stuff so I just wanted to document the fact that the birdlife was unbelievably prolific .. and we thought it would always be like that. Sadly with the drought that followed in 2015 plus the growth in illegal dams upstream and the industrial farming that has come to the valleys upstream, most of the birds have either vanished or gone elsewhere. The black birds were 2 swans who were let out of their pens by some folks who came here, and didn't make it .. so they left without their pets. Sad .. but they probably got taken by the otters who were everywhere at that time. The drought story I tell in later episodes.
