I thought N.S.W Opal miners were bold, enduring harsh conditions and going down into dangerous mines, but Queensland opal miners are bolder.

nice , just wondering if it wouldn t break the opal as they re known to be rather smooth gems
@opalquest2 ай бұрын
Opal from Australia is generally quite strong and will handle the tumbling process, if any break then they wouldn't be good enough to sell anyway. Thanks

Love sounds like you have a bearing problem with one of your wheels, which I found very distracting. However that being said, you did a great job with that stone. A beauty!!

@elishadoyle81914 ай бұрын
How do you find good suppliers? Im starting out and have bought a few small jars ect but i would like to get bigger
@opalquest4 ай бұрын
Yes its hard to find good quality rough opal, its best to go to the opal fields where you can see what your buying ( shine a light through to look for sand, cracks etc) most online rough is poor quality. Were lucky we mine some and then buy of other mining mates if we run low. Cheers

365nm black light torches is what you are after for this sort of activity. The 395nm torches is essentially in the visible light range and not very useful. If you have a UV light and are unsure if it is 365nm or 395nm, In Aust, the most modern bank notes (clear full height strip just off center) have UV watermarks, one side has bird and flowering branch, the other side the serial number lights up, and year of manufacture as well. Older polymer Aussie banknotes, only the serial numbers will fluoresce. Some vendors will claim 365, but will send torches that are not. As it turns out I have 4 uv torches, and each gives a differing result. Below are what I see in relation to the watermarks. The 375 and 385 are guesses as to their frequency. 365, clearly see a bird (yellow-green) and a flowering branch (orange). Will light up year, and the serial. Bright and Vibrant. 375, Both are fairly clear, but not particularly vibrant. Will light up year, and the serial. 385, Both are clear, Branch is a little harder to see than bird. Colors fairly muted. Will light up year, and the serial. 395, only the bird is barely visible. Will light up year, but **not** the serial. Hope the above is of some use.

I am from Omaha Nebraska USA. Watching as many Opal videos as I can as I’ve caught Opal fever lol. I have plans to build my own cabbing machine as buying one commercially made here is outrageous. I gotta say, I am so jealous of you guys. You get to visit the Opal bearing areas in your country and collect what you can find and take it home ! And personally I consider Australian Opal THE BEST Opal in the world. Even the boulder Opal from Australia out shines opals from other parts of the world in my eyes. I seriously wish I could afford to move there and become a citizen of Australia lol. Best of luck to you and thank you for sharing that experience with us !

Fantastic video. Can you buy claims in Coober Pedy? And what regulations are there? I'm looking to spend holidays there and maybe even mine. Do you get claim jumpers out there? Subscribe and following, Also from South Australia.
@opalquest Жыл бұрын
Hi, if you go to the mines department you can get a precious stones prospecting licence and you can then start exploring the area marked for mining (as long as its not pegged) yes there are plenty of claim jumpers in CP unfortunately. Cheers

A small mobile convaor belt might be a helpful addition to moving dirt with the mini excavator could make a small dark box over it with a darklite and camera so you can watch the material you move in the cab and hit e stop button if you see a promising flash in waist dirt ?

New to all of this, and I won't be tumbling precious opal, but I have to ask. No grit?
@opalquest Жыл бұрын
Hi, yes, no grit in this batch as the natural sandstone helps to break down the material to show the opal.
