Stephen Fry always has had a problem with the North-East. See the episode with Ross Noble and lovely Sarah Millican and the stories of "what goes on up there". Read Paperback and you'll see how he always attributed a geordie narrator to homophobic jokes. Nevertheless, he's a canny bloke and I'm not going to nob off to Bruges because of it.

Wor can mean "our," or "my". The most common use of "wor" in Newcastle is probably "wor lass", meaning my wife, or my girlfriend.

Geordie is the oldest spoken English accent and I'm genuinely suprised Stephen doesn't that.

I don't quite understand your comment. He is aware of the Geordie accent. He just couldn't decipher what the joke was because of it. Just a little gap in understanding where Phil was coming from with that joke.

@@TheycallmeMrWonka When Stephen says: "Well they must go to school", he means Geordies must go to school to learn how to speak properly and I find this rather suprising because the Geordie accent is far older the Recieved Pronunciation accent... which is the accent Stephen speaks with. Also, I just realised that there's a typographical error in the last sentence of my original comment. It should read: "... and I'm genuinely surprised Stephen doesn't know that". He might've actually known that but judging by what he said about the Geordie accent I'd say either: A- He didn't, or B- He did and was just poking fun at Geordies because he didn't understand the joke.

Class pure class, confusing the Geordie accent, but the fern for the phone is more Northumbrian Ashington/Newbiggan aria of Northumberland "am on the Fern."

They were talking about a woman named Fearne Cotton and were asked if they know anything abouts Ferns (type of plant). The man who said "Fearne's what?" took Stephen's question as asking about something belonging to Fearne rather than the Fern plant.

"War" is pronounced like "vår", meaning "our(s)" in Norwegian. More evidence that Geordie is closer to the Scandinavian languages.
