HT cables really need to be shielded! Not unless of course, one doesn't mind putting up with a heightened noise floor

Agreed, but this was a video to show the simplicity of SpeakerSnap, and not an actual installation. Didn't want to waste higher quality cable on a demo video. Thanks, though.

For TVs that dont support dts x profile 2 is a hardware or firmware limitation?
@ecoustics
@ecoustics Ай бұрын
DTS:X Profile 2 can be decoded via software. But licensing requirements require that a manufacturer include the DTS:X logo on their packaging and manuals if they license the DTS:X decoder. So it's really unlikely that any existing TV or streaming box that doesn't already decode DTS:X will be updated via software or firmware to support this. Again, it doesn't matter for receivers and soundbars. As long as those support DTS:X they will support this new flavor of DTS:X.

Can confirm, side surrounds are turned off in a 7.1.4 set-up if you have an IMAX Enhanced/DTS:X receiver and get DTS:X/IMAX Enhanced content from Disney+. I tested on a BRAVIA 7 TV and Denon AVR-X3800H receiver. It's a 5.1.4 channel mix and the rear channels get the surround channel information from the 5.1.4-channel DTS:X/IMAX mix. If you want to get sound from all 11 (12) speakers in a 7.1.4 channel system, you need to disable IMAX mode on the receiver. This was an intentional design choice by DTS and IMAX and we've confirmed that with the DTS guy who manages the IMAX Enhanced program. Also, DTS is not affiliated with Sony in any capacity except as a technology partner. Xperi owns DTS, TiVo and HD Radio. Again, not affiliated with Sony. Some Sony TVs can decode DTS:X Profile 2, but only the A95L from 2023 and the BRAVIA 7, 8 and 9 from 2024. DTS and Disney+ started with Android TV/Google TVs for this launch because it was the easiest platform to code for, and there were a fair amount of models in market that had DTS:X decoding on board (several TVs from Hisense, TCL and Sony in the US, plus Xiaomi, Philips and Sharp in other markets). Also, there is nothing to worry about with older receivers and no firmware update required. The design of the new DTS:X Profile 2 codec builds the upward compatiblity into the source device (the streaming device). With DTS:X Profile 2, the source device communicates with the receiver or soundbar using HDMI/EDID to identify the level of DTS support in the "sync device" (the receiver or soundbar). It then transcodes the DTS:X Profile 2 codec to DTS:X Profile 1 so an existing older A/V receiver with DTS:X (without IMAX Enhanced certification) works perfectly fine for this and will get a DTS:X signal it can decode. A DTS:X Profile 2 source device will even transcode to DTS 5.1 or DTS-HD, depending on the level of DTS support in the sync device (receiver or soundbar). The main difference between this and the existing Dolby Atmos mixes is that the DTS:X IMAX Enhanced mix is sourced from the IMAX 12-channel theatrical mix *not* from the nearfield home theater mix used in Atmos and regular 5.1 mixes. So it has greater dynamic range. The limitation right now is the number and selection of streaming devices that support DTS:X Profile 2 - Google/Android TVs from Sony, TCL and Hisense. That's it right now for the US. LG TVs (WebOS) and VIZIO TVs with Streamcast are on the roadmap for support later this year. It remains to be seen when or if standalone streaming devices like FireTV, Roku, NVIDIA Shield will support this, but I expect that will only come with new hardware (a new stick or streaming box). These companies need to pay Xperi for the DTS:X decoding license and the licensing requirements require that logos be included on the packaging and manuals. Hard to do that with products that are already on shelves. XBox already supports DTS:X and Microsoft is an Xperi partner, so I suspect the Disney+ app on XBox Series X will also get an update to support this. Hope that helps.

Are 2023 LG TVs in the roadmap for support Profile 2? Or only 2024 TVs?

@@leobesst86 2023 is possible as that's when LG started including DTS:X, but we'll need to confirm that when the app update rolls out. We're not aware of any updates to older models at this time.

@@leobesst86 - our DTS contact said LG support was "in progress" but didn't specify which models. From what I understand, DTS:X was added to LG TVs in 2023, so I'd expect that the 2023 OLEDs and maybe some of the higher-end LED/LCD sets will likely get the Disney+ app update to support this some time this year. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

Are you sure ATMOS is more compressed than DTS? Contrary to what most “atmos speaker” manufacturers will tell you, ATMOS is designed for every speaker to be full dynamic range, just like the IMAX spec, though it can also accommodate subs. Also, *zero* devices that are no longer for sale will receive firmware updates, and that could include something as huge and expensive as the Denon X8500HA, which debuted not so long ago, but is starting to be phased out. Why? There’s zero financial incentive. They will add it to products that will entice new customers, not to products that are done bringing in new customers. The cost benefit analysis just isn’t good enough.

Also, Audioholics says Disney+ will be using object-based DTS:X for Imax Enhanced, which supports up to 13.1 channels.

In terms of codec/compression, DTS:X Profile 2 (on Disney+) uses a fixed bitrate of 448 kbps. Dolby Atmos bitrate varies from 384 kbps to 768 kbps. Some Atmos titles on Apple TV+ uses the full 768kbps rate and really sound great. So technically DTS:X Profile 2 can use *more* compression than Dolby Atmos. But DTS:X Profile 2 is a 3-year-old codec compared to Atmos which is a 12-year-old codec. So apples and oranges. What's different in these new DTS:X/IMAX soundtracks is that they are based on the IMAX theatrical mix so they sound much more dynamic and punchy than the nearfield Atmos mixes. Also, older DTS:X receivers don't need an update to work with this. The source streaming device (in this case, the TV) transcodes the DTS:X Profile 2 codec to DTS:X Profile 1 which works with older (legacy) DTS:X receivers. They won't have the extra audio processing of IMAX Enhanced, but they get the same DTS:X 5.1.4 channel mix that the new IMAX Enhanced receivers get. The Denon 8500 has both IMAX Enhanced certification and DTS:X decoding and works perfectly with the new DTS:X soundtracks on Disney+.

@@lo_fye - Disney+ uses lossy DTS:X Profile 2 at 448 kbps, but it sounds very good. The only services I know of with lossless DTS:X are Kaleidescape (expensive!) and *possibly* Sony Pictures Core (formerly Bravia Core) which is only available on Sony TVs.

In the US, it's currently limited to select 2023 and 2024 model year Google and Android TVs from Sony, Hisense and TCL. Outside the US, there are some TVs from Philips, Xiaomi and Sharp. Hopefully device support will be expanded later this year.
