Northern Portugal is like California but massively cheaper. Why would you buy a house in Malibu for $20+ million when you can have a similar one in Leica da Palmeira, Apulia, Esposende, or Povoa de Varzim for $1-2 million?

You missed some of the best beach places which are in the north of Portugal: Esposende, Fao, Apulia, and how about Povoa De Varzim.

Why do you pay so much? I guess it is Lisbon, not the shop selection. Perhaps, try Pingo Doce or Mini Preco? Prices should be lower. At least here up in the north of Portugal. I pay Salmon 15-16 euros per kilo. I buy fruit and veggies at local fruit shops and it is cheaper than the supermarket. For example, local tomatoes are no more than 1.50 per kilo and they are amazing. The other day I bought some delicious ripened ones for 99 cents per kilo. Consider there are also deals on fresh food all day around so you can end up buying some items with a 30% discount and still with a few days left before the expiration date.

You may not be the one renting out expensive apts etc but people like us have had a huge influence on the accom market price...and others. It's the way of people with a bigger income than locals happy to come here and influence those prices so of course many PT people get pissed off, and you can't blame them? Yes, the Govt, the EU machinations, the global economics all have some influence on these issues but if you are a local we are the ones they can see on the street so we become a target for frustration sometimes. I've only had one minor comment in 6 years so can't complain. I think it is common for people from affluent nations to take their bigger income to cheap countries to get their goodies, their playtime or cheap moves to such nations without thinking about what locals must feel when all this goes on around them? And, there are plenty of the loud arrogant foreigners in that general mix too so it helps if people like us do give constant consideration for the locals and make sure we don't always play the rich interlopers...a little humility goes a long way ?

@@ThisisYulia isn’t it stupid to say that non-English speaking countries are good for international students? What about finding a job in a labor market you don’t speak the language of and that usually privileges native speakers? Don’t you have a voice inside your mind that tells you you are doing bad information and pushing young naive international students towards education journeys that will not yield nothing in terms of future prospects? Especially for international students coming from countries with a bad job market who can’t return back to their own country after education in a foreign country they cannot work in
@ThisisYuliaКүн бұрын
people are different and if you're not willing to learn a new language, that's unfortunate :) many universities and colleges offer language courses, so students can learn the language. I also believe that international students are smart enough to understand that if you're moving to Germany to study, eventually you'll need to speak German to work there and to get a residence card. as for English-speaking countries, they are not much better: you pay 20k+/year in tuition fees, and then you can't find a place to live and can't find a job after graduation. at least you study in English, am I right? 😂
@user-lc4gr8nx2jКүн бұрын
@@ThisisYulia do you think it is realistic to work in a non-English speaking country after having learned that foreign language in homogeneous teams (as they usually are)? I have seen on LinkedIn the Team set-up in Germany-based branches and you really don’t see all these internationals who learned German and then seamlessy work there with German colleagues Usually internationals work in international English speaking teams and these are prevalent in English speaking countries where you see the most diversity Have you had different experiences? Is it realistic in your opinion for an international to work in a German team reading German documents, understanding German pop culture and joke for the team fit and interacting with German clients who maybe speak with dialect inflections? Please tell me

- Expats should not be hated! *Proceeds to tell a whole list of reasons on why to hate expats* xd Now, seriously, I think you mixed up the term expat and immigrant. Your "good" characteristics for expats are just the characteristics of immigrants. I don't think anyone would complain of an English comming to Spain, opening their bussiness, learning Spanish, and integrating into the community. That's what you'd call an immigrant. The problem comes when the expat comes. The digital nomad that only gets lunch at the only-English speaking, expat/tourist oriented "brunch restaurant", only talks with other expats, and doesn't even create jobs or pay that much taxes. All things you also admitted to be red flags. Although the dictionary says expat and immigrant are synonyms, no one here uses these words as such, but as I've described up here. That's the reason of all the hate towards expats, at least where I live. Hope I could clarify a bit the terms and explained myself well, have a great day! :)

I don't know why people don't put the spolight on Cambridge exams, it's more serious and the certificate is permanent, it feels a lot more rewarding even though you do have to check your need. I just feel like they should be accepeted everywhere.

If one can survive the first two semesters at TUM, the university is highly recommended, but the problem with German universities in general is that students are compelled to resort to defensive learning strategies which basically means surviving the tests at the end of each semester. The expected learning curve is very steep, and if one doesn't adjust fast and learns how to cope, one won't be able to last. This is due to the high intake of student each yea, and the university weeds them out by brutal attrition methods, The dropout rates and graduation rates speak volume about the nature of the beast. Going to the Technical University of Munich, for example, is not fun at all. TUM is definitely not Georgia Tech; it is a completely different learning environment. When one develops a defensive learning strategy, one becomes less creative, less daring, and less imaginative, and this is the reason that the hi-tech scene in Germany is not the one that one finds in Silicon Valley.
