Hi there - I can't remember now - do you mean the type of deer or the name they gave it? I know they all had names but just can't bring it to mind - not even the victorious one or the poor loser that was left out at the end. Glad you liked the clip tho - sorry couldn't help x

Not to criticise you here but jimmy shand never actually wrote the bluebell polka, he was a great friend of my grans and he only made the tune famous

The type of accordion Jimmy Shand played is what's known as a British Chromatic Accordion. Basically, it's a 3-row melodeon in the keys of B, C & C# with a normal Stradella bass the type you normally see on piano accordions. Pretty hard to find now and fairly difficult to play as they have a different note on the in and out of the bellows and the air going in and out of them needs to be well regulated by an air bar on the back of the bass. Very rewarding to play once learned though!

The first tune is MacEwan's Barn (a bairn is something else!) Seonaid is the next tune in the set. There's only a short sample of this towards the end of the piece, mostly under dialogue. We play MacEwan's Barn as part of a Canadian Barn Dance set. If you would like the "dots" for it, get in contact via the FBDBmusic KZfaq channel and I'll get the music off to you.

Can the rest of this be found anywhere? I danced the Schottish to this many times from Oban to Obbe and a couple of places inbetween. Fergie's timing has always been the best for dancing!

I've heard a bagpipe setting for the first tune. Does anyone know the name of it or where I can find the dots? I can't find MacEwan's Bairn anywhere and Seonaid seems to be a different tune all together(I've seen it written as a 5/4 strathspey).

@km426 In some ways there is a world of difference but the great jazz musician Duke Ellington is supposed to have said that there are only two types of music which possess swing; one is jazz, the other Scottish music. :-)

@Therehasbeenan you mean Jimmy Shand? there are button accordions and piano accordions... I only learned on the piano accordion, so I can't tell you much about the other :) but I'm sure there are great websites out there from "button box" fans, i'd go from there!
