The type of accordion Jimmy Shand played is what's known as a British Chromatic Accordion. Basically, it's a 3-row melodeon in the keys of B, C & C# with a normal Stradella bass the type you normally see on piano accordions. Pretty hard to find now and fairly difficult to play as they have a different note on the in and out of the bellows and the air going in and out of them needs to be well regulated by an air bar on the back of the bass. Very rewarding to play once learned though!

@Therehasbeenan you mean Jimmy Shand? there are button accordions and piano accordions... I only learned on the piano accordion, so I can't tell you much about the other :) but I'm sure there are great websites out there from "button box" fans, i'd go from there!

Not to criticise you here but jimmy shand never actually wrote the bluebell polka, he was a great friend of my grans and he only made the tune famous

Jimmy Shand was not a Scot. He was English French Germanic
