The dark haired Ronnie is the clean & sober version trying to become a better person while blonde Ronnie is the addict side of him that wants to stay in control & sabotage everything sober Ronnie's accomplished. i love how listening to the song and watching the 2 videos each tell a separate story. just the song tells the story of a girl breaking up with the guy, he cant handle it and drinks himself dead, she realizes too late her mistake and drinks herself dead. the brad and allison video showcases the guy coming home from WW2, catching his girl cheating or in the process of cheating, leaves drinks himself dead, she realizes she can't fix it anymore, tries to move on, sees his ghost everywhere drinks herself dead, and they reunite in the afterlife (which is wrong IMO bc if they are jesus people, they are in hell bc they committed the ultimate sin.) the drew and Caitlynne video shows a different story about miscommunication bc she gets kissed by a drunkard and all he sees is her pulling him in deeper, him turning to the bottle to drown in and dying, her realizing she's lost her loved one bc some douche couldn't control themselves turns to drinking and then dies. 3 completely different stories dependent on how u consumed the song.

you are right that the video adds an extra layer to the song, when you hear just the song it's just another good country song, but when you see the video that gives you that bit of backstory/context as to why they both drank themselves to death, and the harmony between brad and alison are also just phenomenal. Drew has a good cover, but not really my style

I think Brad's version timed the soldier around WWI or WWII - I lack knowledge there. But I lean more to WWI. No matter what - many soldiers returned to unfaithful partners due to the horrors of war. Sad in too many ways - and repeated too often. Great reaction.

part 3 we are not dealing with a kid that as been spoon fed and as been given everything on a silver platter. We are talking about a kid that had to work hard, really hard, to please a dad that expected too much out of a kid. the dad is obviously wrong but it doesn't mean anything to the kid. i don't want to sound offensive or anything, but i think this is an important part of the meaning of the song.

I have listened to the original countless times, but Caitlynne's voice is unbelievable. I didn't think anyone could do justice to Brad Paisley & Alison Krauss (what an angelic voice), but love love this version.
