Like many issues in this crazy nation of late one initiative cynically offered to address one thing has caused more issues without addressing the initial cause of the problem (ie gov grants to people to insulate their homes and apparently feel warmer , the migrant crisis is another example but i wont elucidate on that here) . Those who through no fault of their own in cold houses and not able to pay the exorbitant energy bills requested by the "energy company profiteering gangs" went for this option . Cowboy installers put it in often when it wasnt advised and also botched its insulation. They went off with the money from the gov as did the energy company gangs who were the underlying cause of the problem in the first place!!! So the sadly uninformed public were left with mould as well as cold. The gov will never admit to any of this near sighted planning as usual and will not do the right thing I suspect and pay for the repairs from their yet again terrible policy. Another sad and disgraceful example of fall out from awful people milking and profiteering on the public. We have been complacent as we use to live in a nation with ethics . Now as this is going the rot is literally coming out of the walls!!!!

My house was built in 1851 with 800mm solid stone walls. Tried my energy supplier and told it would be 15 weeks before the case was passed to a contact who would then discuss my needs. Need external wall insulation as downstairs the walls have fitted kitchen, tiles, stair case and a stone feature wall. Upstairs some of the walls leak. Twenty companies contacted and nobody wants to do the job. I am just one of many.

Cowboy grant collecting companies that close down, I’ve had two different homes where the cavity insulation was later found not done properly, complete walls with no insulation in the cavity, I had to get the industry trade organisation CIGA involved.

Few things picked up on, mc4 in the loft are fitted wrong way round, “male” pin goes in the “female” side of the mc4, no need for labels on installs as of 2nd amendment only label needed is a solar array sticker near point of isolation for fire fighters and the solar array label should never be stuck on a paintable surface, also no need for a generation meter on installs anymore as suppliers will not accept readings from them, only from CT clamp readings at the incomer

Ok here i am 71 year old worked in shipyard /building trade for over 40 years ....first thing I notice in this video those chaps putting the insulation in the attic what are they wearing ? Masks+ hazard clothes ? ...Why would that be ?.....Could it be that glass wool is hazardous to a human ? Maybe to stop a person breathing in those glass wool particles? What damage would glass wool particles do to your lungs if you breath in ? As you may have already guessed I am not a fan of open glass wool had more then my fair share of glass wool in the shipyard and out on building sites. In the shipyard the glass wool would get into your skin pores and you would suffer badly. Same again on building sites used to employ about 100 guys doing timber frames and more. Every time you would go into a loft you can see the glass particles floating about in the air usually through a skylight you can see it more that way. Those glass particles end up in your upstairs rooms cant see that doing anyone any good. One day in the future they will find glass wool causes problems (just like asbestos in the shipyards /building trade) ... Yup not a fan of glass wool for health reasons.

My parents has insulation fitted under the government’s scheme for “free” and when I went up in the loft I found all the lighting wiring was covered over with insulation. Disconnecting bits of the circuit and running new cable in above the insulation clipped to the woodwork with metal electric staples. Probably not an issue with LED lights dropping the wattage down but still better done properly.
@nikcnakc12 ай бұрын
My experience of the scheme has been very poor, despite stating that they can do a wide mix of insulation my 1900s solid block walled property (one of the more leaky properties available) and got told that I can't have it as they were only offering roof insulation despite nobody even looking at my property. Very disappointed in the scheme

I worry about insulation creating damp. My house has been breathing happily for seventy odd years, if i go and stuff the cavity surely it will create a route for water penetration. Watched a builder sourcing damp problems and he took out some bricks to find the insulation soaking wet. Would definitely consider more loft insulation but that stuff between the rafters worries me, it again looks like a water bridge. Be grateful for some opinions on the subject as i want to insulate but dont want to cause problems.
@davideyres9552 ай бұрын
Insulation does not create damp but it will reduce the temperature so that the humidity in the air causes a dew point below the new lower temperature and it condenses out of the air onto the coldest surface. You would then need to manage the humidity of the air in the colder space either by putting in a vapour barrier or taking the insulation out and heat the space (and cost yourself more heating the space) The problem is living in an enclosed space you create moisture by breathing alone (cooking, washing, showering etc all create moisture) so that needs managing as sealing the rooms will cause moisture build inside the room so a MVHR system is the solution but retro fitting this is expensive. You can use a dehumidifier but it’s expensive.

Who had the silly idea of putting the boiler in the loft? Also is there a carbon monoxide and fire alarm that is interlinked in that space to the rest of the house?
@tomf31602 ай бұрын
Many people do this, aslong as good access maintained no reason why it shouldn't be in the loft space
@sergiofernandez37252 ай бұрын
@@tomf3160 Most domestic boilers are not made to go into lofts, in fact some manufacturers have it in writting on their instructions. Some British Gas engineers will not service a boiler in a loft. Some insurance companies will not insure properties with boiler in loft. Either way if you choose to have it in your loft you need a carbon monoxide and fire alarm that is interlinked to the other floors

I've got 400mm insulation in my loft, so no need for loft insulation. I have solid walls (no cavity). Almost every energy company is only providing cavity and loft insulation, so they won't help me. I think Octopus is doing external wall insulation, but I've been on the waiting list for months and heard nothing. The lack of insulation means a heat pump isn't viable for me either.
@dave0smeg2 ай бұрын
There are a lot of companies installing insulation under the government's scheme to help landlords and tenants. Some of these companies are only there to fleece the money by cutting corners and invoicing for work that didn't need doing or hasn't been done. That's what happened to our landlord.

I applied and got a referral to EDF, and that was the last I heard about it! Watching this has reminded me to raise a new one and hopefully a different supplier will assist. I'm not with any of the listed suppliers on the application so it suggests I can choose any of them. I do currently have 12 rolls of 200mm insulation waiting to be deployed in my loft, and will be spreading them out this weekend, but i'm interested to see if there is anything else they could assist with.
@robertlamont94552 ай бұрын
Pardon my scepticism over any UK government insulation scheme being intended to work, rather than give the appearance of doing something... However, good luck in spreading the word and increasing uptake, it is desperately needed in the UK and has been for decades, Your worked example of 22,241 to 9,241kWh piqued my curiosity, as I've dropped 23,000 to ca 8,000kWh with winters down to -16 and a 'hot roof' that's anything but... With a Yorkshire climate I'd guess this place would be ca 5,000kWh, but if I ever get round to sorting out the 'hot' roof, it may yet be achievable... I was surprised to see in the video clip, packing insulation between light metal channel as it's a thermal bridge - I can still see the effect of the original metalwork showing through a timber stud sandwich overlay in really cold weather, albeit seriously reduced. The effect of a 50mm polystyrene sandwich on the coombes was quite extraordinary... Best of luck...
