Eckardstein’s performance of Night Wind tops any other Medtner recording in my opinion, with the exception of Medtner’s own recordings of his works

Fantastic. At first, I thought that the video was playing at 1.25× speed... it wasn’t. The recordings by Debargue, Sudbin, and Eckardstein were completely new.

The ending of the sonata ballade is unequivocally one of the greatest moments in the piano repertoire. Astounding. Ending of his 2nd concerto is great too
@thinkOfMeAsAClassicalMusician2 күн бұрын
I agree that he wasn’t the as much a melodist as rach in the sense that his focus was not on organic beautiful melodies that kind of stand on their own as the themes of the pieces, but rather on little intervalic motives that he could develop and intertwine to create all themes from the same motivoc pool. Much like brahms. I think these melodies become even more compelling than rach’s on the long run, when you realize all the connections between the melodic material of the work as a whole.

Lmao the D major triad that just spawns in the middle of that highly dissonant passage hit me like a truck (2:58)

So glad you included the Medtner concerti! They are probably some of the best works ever composed in the genre, and they're all so good that my favorite changes from day to day. Something notable I wish you could have mentioned was the reprise of the first D major theme in the first concerto, where the piano and orchestra play the theme together in a magnificent 4 (or even 5?) voice stretto.

20:18 Étude 10, Richter achieves razor-sharp precision (Pollini's 1970s recording is not dry enough IMO). probably the most astonishing moment in this compilation

I love the sonata-ballade mainly for the absolute beauty that is its second subject (6:08). And what's pretty neat about it is that starting from the D#, the leap down and then climb back up to D# is actually the same motif as used in the RH of the coda (6:57).

Variations op.2 I believe is perhaps Chopin's hardest piece. Also some etudes are way harder than ballades. Op. 10 n. 1, n. 2, n. 10... they are hell, without a single break

Tozer’s Medtner concertos are so good. The second movement of the second concerto is absolutely silky smooth and tugs hard at the heartstrings. It ebbs and flows in such a pretty way.

Excellent compilation, Medtner is in my TOP THREE composers of all time alongside Chopin and Alkan - his works have given me so much joy over the 2 decades I've known them and they continue to reveal hidden depths. Truly a composer worth the time it takes to become acquainted with - his musical world is unique and magical. In the end - comparisons to other composers are facile and pointless - Medtner is unique!

His major works are his 14 piano sonatas and 3 concertos, so any of the pieces on this video are a good place to start. There are also a number of his less virtuosic works that are highly regarded, such as his Sonata Reminiscenza, Sonata Idyll, and the fairy tales and forgotten melodies.
@albrechtgaub28822 күн бұрын
Don‘t forget about his violin sonatas, especially the third. He also wrote a large number of songs on Russian and German texts. But he never composed a piece in which the piano does not play (just like Chopin).

First, let me say bravo and thank you for this marvelous compendium. Second…I have to take issue with the Debussy entry. :) I think either prelude book contains passages that surpass that etude in difficulty. The pedaling alone…
