I was recommended here by DAS Bookbinding, but Harebrained refused to take my order. Sad.

The name 'Harebrained' Press was the name given to our first major project that took over 6 years to complete, which at the time seemed foolish and overly ambitious :) Check out the website if you are interested in learning more www.harebrainedpress.com

Thanks for posting this. I have a Pearl #1 which I haven't used in over 50 yrs. I'm in the process of restoring it so I can sell it. I'll be sad to see it go as it is such a nice machine but it's time it had a new owner who would use and appreciate it. Pearl presses are the best!

@@theharebrainedpress9326 - Mine's pretty much identical to yours. An old-style, 7 X 11", No.3 . - made in 1906. It's missing the drawers, but is otherwise in great shape. It didn't require any more than a good cleaning and a new set of rollers. It was rescued last year from an old newspaper office in Cayuga, Ontario, (in Canada) along with a lot of great type and other bits and pieces.

@@bell8541 That's brilliant! Yes, Joe Fazzio and Rick Hawkins helped us out immensely with some parts to get this one up and running again. My partner made the drawers and feed table from Tasmanian Oak. Such a great press to operate but not for the faint of heart! Does yours have an impression lever to stop the platen action? That is one feature that ours does not have which would come in handy and would be much safer to use.

@@theharebrainedpress9326 - No throw switch on mine either. I do such small runs of most things I just end up spinning the flywheel by hand a lot of the time so it's not a big issue.

This needs an explanation - why make these endpapers at all. It is not clear if this short video is part of a sequence. Puzzling

The size of the book tells a story. The end papers need all the help they can get in keeping this book integral. Reinforcing the middle with a hinge where they sewing goes is a brilliant solution to the distribution of the force of the text block.

If you are interested in simply watching someone work, it is a nice video. If you watch book binding videos for instruction forget it. It appears it is simply an advertisement for the Harebrained Press.

Hi Hoseaistheone. Thanks for the comment and sorry if this was misleading. We are actually planning on making instructional videos (among other things) in the future. Harebrainedpress is a team of one person (and a helper who loads videos, lifts presses etc).. everything is done during spare time. We don't sell classes or directly promote anything and simply wanted to share some clips for the love of the craft. When the books are completed, they will be for sale via other methods. These videos are partially practice for making longer more complicated films.

Not a book press, it is a copying press. The majority of presses people call book presses or nipping presses were used for copying documents. A process developed by Watt of steam fame in the late 1700s.
