Only Sudokus I want to solve are the ones ranked ***** or hardest possible. I'm always learning something new by solving these (for some reason, THE WEEK's Sudokos are the most difficult.) Anyway, actually discovered came across this puzzle for the first time when it debuted in 1979 to practically no fanfare! Took quite a while for these puzzles to catch fire in the US.

I can follow up to the point where you start eliminating numbers; I use probabilities which work 50% of the time, lol.

Is there a possibility of accessing a text version of your puzzle so I can follow along and learn some new solving techniques? I can't see the screen--magnification to the nth power isn’t going to help anything, but may be able to follow along auditorially and pick something up if I could access text. For example, a row with the second, fourth, seventh, and ninth cells filled in could be represented as: -2- 9-- 6-8

Hi happybakergirl, you can take a screenshot and print that. Or pause the video and copy it. I hope that helps!

The last technique used is not a forcing chain, it's a w-wing though

2:25 unfortunately this is wrong here. You can't start a skyscraper by stating something is true. The first assumption must be false. Same problem at 6:20

For example 1 - I don't see how this is a y-wing. Both of the wing cells have only two candidates, yes, but BOTH candidates in each of the wing cells are also in the pivot cell. That is until at 1:05 two candidates in the pivot cell magically disappear to make the pattern fit the definition. How did you know which of the 4 original candidates in the pivot cell to eliminate?

1st example: both top-7's could be true (A7 and B2), with row H having a 7 in column 6. The argument holds when reasoning from False > True > F > T, but fails in the T>F>T>F case. I.e. if A7 is False then B2 is True, but the reverse doesn't hold. Or am I missing something? The problem is that H2 and H7 don't have a strong link because of H6. EDIT: there *is* a strong link once you identify the matched 2-7 pair in H2/H7 (which eliminates all other 7's from row H). But you do that only afterwards. So yes, the skyscraper argument eventually holds, but only if you had presented it in the right order.

Excellent explanation. I see so many how-to's that show what to look for but don't explain the exclusion logic. This is a very powerful demonstration and learning tool. Thank you.

See 10:10, the "matching pair" were due for a separation by noting the 3 sitting in the block below.. 😊

Nice technique. Obviously if there are 3 completed segment then the block is complete; 2 completed segements in the same block mean this technique cannot be used; therefore we're looking for a single completed segment within a block. What if there is one horzontal and one vertical within the same block? Can we use this technique for each seperately? Many thanks, your pace and description are very helpful.
@grahamastor419419 күн бұрын
I just re-viewed the video and you actually show a block with a horizontal and vertical completed segment - so I take it from that the technique can be used in this case.

Excellent video - I’ve watched this video three times over the past week and today I finally found and solved an xy wing. It feels great to have spotted an xy wing and worked out the logic. I have been struggling with the xy concept for sometime and this video make total sense to me. Thank you.

I think that your explanation for calling this method an empty rectangle is wrong. The empty rectangle refers to the area that consists of the block , the conjugate pair, and the cell that has the number that would be eliminated. When you connect all these they create a rectangle shape.
