I am currently in the thick of dissertation writing too. Chapter two is underway. And I cannot thank you enough for timing this video so perfectly--I really needed to hear someone who has been through this process and remind myself there is light at the end of this tunnel.

Oh no! I appreciate that this is framed as a compliment, but this is a crazy thing to say to someone, especially given that physiognomy is a pseudo-science with a history of racist application.

Do you mean how does my staying indoors help? It helps my family members with health risks and the three airports worth of people I needed to interact with, by not exposing them to risk of infection that could cause serious illness

I am a former high School English teacher now, among other things, homeschooling my high school daughter. I had the brilliant idea that she could read some cannibalism focused texts this year! (She is a huge fan of the locked room series.). Any recommendations?

Carson, congrats on your process! I am curious as to whether or not you’ll apply to the job market this year? I am in the process of finishing my dissertation (transforming shitty first draft of chapter 4 into a more polished version) while applying to the job market and ohmygot what a whirlwind it is.

Congrats to you as well on being close to finishing, it sounds like we're at really similar stages! I'm actually not planning to go on the job market, I've decided not to pursue academia further after the PhD. My hope is to move into creative writing next, though I'm still figuring out what that's going to look like!

Hi, I have recently subscribed to you and I love your content. Congratulations on your final draft. I don't have a Tiktok, so I am kinda lost about your PhD journey. Could you make a video on how to start the thesis writing process, from the beginning? I am too, doing a PhD in english literature and would love your point of view on gathering sources, making notes and converting those notes into a full draft. Thanks a lot

I have been wanting to make a video like that! Unfortunately it's often harder for me to make time for that kind of video, since it takes a little more work to put together - I mostly make videos narrating my workdays since that fits in with what I'm already doing. But definitely I'll go into detail looking back at the whole research / writing journey at some point :)

Hello! I love your highlight color system for edits! Please could you explain what you mean by problems in source use?
@GlutenbergBible
@GlutenbergBible 4 күн бұрын
I basically use my color-coding to indicate whether the edit I make is something that's just based on my own ideas and writing, or something that I'll need to return to my sources for! So problems related to source use are things like needing to include more quotes from a certain academic article, or double-checking my summary of a plot point in a play, or marking an area where I think I need to do a little more research, etc.

It’s important to show the struggles I think. Life isn’t always perfect and it ok. It’s just a cycle, the ebbs and flows, just know it will be good again ☺️. Hope you feel better soon ☺️

Thanks for sharing the real stuff. It helps us feel like we are not alone. My grandmother passed a few weeks ago and I've been having a hard time getting back into my routine since then. I was doing so well balancing everything (work, PhD, research, family, exercise, etc.) and now I feel like I'm just barely treading water.

I’m so sorry to hear that you’ve lost someone recently. This last semester, I lost my grandmother, too. And I felt so alone in not being able to balance everything (similar to you - work, PhD, manuscripts, etc.), like I was failing her. But take time for yourself. And know that the work will be there. Jumping right back into work without more than a 3 day breather finally caught up to me. grieving takes time (and though it doesn’t ever fully go away, you’ll have moments of balance again 🫶🏽)

So you wrote a novel while working on your PhD and while having a KZfaq channel? And I am here telling myself that I will continue with writing once I finish my master's thesis while the KZfaq channel is a wish I plan to work on one day. I mean the second one. I have given up on my first a year and a half ago. OK, I can do it. I can finish my thesis by the end of the summer and defend it before the classes start in the next school year. Then I will be free of guilt for following up with my passions because there will be no "I need to study instead." demon following me around. Just... There is so much resistance. It is making my life much harder than it needs to be.

To be totally transparent, I have free time to do things like this in large part because I live in a different time zone from all my friends and family - when I had more of a social life, I spent less time on creative writing and content creation! It's always a balancing act to fit multiple things in. I like taking on challenges, but I would never recommend taking on things that make life harder and more stressful than they need to be. Life is long - there's time for work and passion projects and many things besides, but sometimes one needs to take priority over the other for a while!

One strategy that I have is trying to just write 500 words, they can be terrible but having them out of my body helps along with writing a "zero draft", it feels like intimidating than a first draft and on one sees it but me.
