If clueless people keep being these overpriced fashioned accessories, Apple will keep selling them. Sadly, It's as simple as that.

I was a UIUC Business major, so I understand the difference between MARGIN and VOLUME, but I don't believe Tim Cook KNOWS enough about Business! (Like that old Apple Board Member K---something who PREVENTED Apple from licensing the MacOS, as Bill Gates suggested they do in 1985, 10 yrs before he came out with Win95!) I'll be staying with my 2010 Mac Pro 5,1 for as long as possible, currently 'booting' Monterey 12.7.4 from an internal nvme PCI drive, with a 12-core 3.33ghz Xeon, GTX 670 2g GPU, 96g, 2xUSB3.0 + 2xUSBc card and a free slot #4! My 5,1 is right ABOVE the M1 chip on the Cinebench 2024 ranking?

Just 5 years ago no one would be doing the intense editing you do on any laptop, this is what desktops were for and they're now becoming obsolete. Sometimes you have to take a step back and look at how quickly all of this has advanced, and it's incredible

Great analysis. I got a bit impulsive several weeks ago and had ordered the R1 the first time I saw it presented. By now I have seen a number of devastating reviews like this one, and managed to cancel the still pending order for full refund. I agree that smartphones will continue to be the #1 device type, and any and all wearables need to be able to connect to it or they're toast because enforced internet roundtrips for answers will never be fast and reliable enough to provide a satisfactory experience. The short battery life was the final nail in the coffin - babysitting those devices several times a day is ridiculous.

I'm a system builder. SOCs are fine for laptops and phones. But, for desktops, servers, gaming rigs, etc., they're a non-starter. Any new ARM architecture needs to allow for a rich selection of motherboards with CPU replacement and upgrades, memory upgrades, dedicated graphics and the like. Otherwise, it's a non-starter.

Typical company cycles. Innovation comes then they end up shooting themselves in the foot, it's a weird inevitable cycle. Blockbuster, newspapers, tower records, and now what seems next, Netflix, gaming, apple etc. Whats wild is the solution is often pretty simple, but is never reached. Power consumes all.

The M1 chip was disruptive and now they are in the iterative improvement phase. That's natural, and it's also natural for the industry to catch up.

The competition may be starting to catch up, but they're still miles off. Qualcom's latest and greatest benchmarked behind an M3, and they've just released the M4. I've just got an X1 carbon as I use Linux exclusively, the ultra 7 155H is a step up from the 11th gen i7 in my previous computer but battery life is about 6-7 hours realistically for day to day tasks. When you put it in energy saver mode, you can seriously tell. My colleagues have M2 and M3 airs and Pros, they get about double the battery life. Battery life is FAR more useful than raw power, and apple silicon is way ahead on both. Interesting to see what qualcom do in the future, I highly doubt I'll ever buy an Intel based computer again.

Having repaired or attempted to repair many MacBooks, I would never buy one. Forgetting all the booby traps they place in there and the HIGHLY questionable design/hardware connection choices like the ribbon cables with zero rigidity(& zero slack), the placement of obstructions to hold connectors in that then make it impossible to get them back in without removing said obstruction which is adhered to the motherboard over traces, etc the $/performance is obsurd in my personal opinion. Especially considering how easily they break. One IT office at a place I worked had multiple 4' stacks of dead MacBook pros and Airs that were no older than 2 years old at the time. Many had heat syncs that ad gouges on the block on top of not being flat and relied entirely too much on thermal paste....thermal paste that apparently dires up and cracks after only a couple years of office use. I have opened mining GPUs that ran full blast for 5-7 years that had paste in better shape than those. I used a MacBook pro when I worked at that place and to be honest, it WAS fine for the type of work we did, which mostly relied on cloud applications. I liked Preview as a default PDF editor, but it wasn't enough to make me pay what they ask for those things. I said it "was" fine, because when they rolled out the new version of Mac OS, the thing became completely useless. It would hang up doing the simplest tasks even after doubling the RAM and installing a SSD. It was the same age as the ones on the stacks and even though it still technically "worked", it might as well have just joined the rest of them. I ended up getting a crappy $350 Asus laptop from best buy and that thing is still kicking today many years later. It is poorly made and uses very cheap parts, but still outlived a $2500 macbook?! I get many brought to me for repair and I turn them down most of the time. Especially if they are overheating since getting to the chips to replace the paste is a craps shoot as far as being able to get it back together. I admit I have not worked on many of the apple silicon models, but I they are apparently just as likley to die as the Intels apparently as people keep wanting me to fix them as paying apple will cost as much as a new, better PC. They are.lile the Subaru or VW of computers based on my experience and I just don't get why they are so popular. Although, the reason I hear from those that bring me them when I ask why they bought/buy Apple is "they just work". I'm not sure where that idea came from since they keep bringing me broken ones, but I have a feeling it is the result of people buying the marketing and then passing it on as personal experience. Kinda like how some people swear that the 70-80% difference in price from an Nvidia GPU is worth the 5-10% on average performance increase....on games using RT as AMD usually tops them when doing standard rasterization which is 80% of games. Perhaps I am missing something, but my experience makes that pretty clear to me.

I was NOT impressed by the M1. And my world speaks x86 anyway. Not impressed by the M1 and Apple changing the CPU architecture again, I was rather disappointed with Apple. Apple has already changed the CPU architecture five times. If I were an Apple user, I would have had to buy my software again 5 times. Things are different with my x86 PC, which can still run the software that I bought 34 years ago. If you don't know, Apple made the following CPU architecture transfers: 6502 -> 68K -> PowerPC -> x86 -> ARM (M1) And battery life isn't that important to me since I work on a desktop PC most of the time anyway.

At first I thought the fins on the Mac Pro lock were for cables to run through so the Keyboard/Mouse/Accessory wires could be locked to the machine. I guess I was wrong but that would also have been useful in any place where theft might be a possibility, especially with desirable Apple peripherals.
