I'd like to say (as a queer trans man) about the cringe aspects of the comic or "fetishicization," it seems to depend on the other communities someone is a part of. I'm autistic, trans, and queer and most of my friends are all of the above as well. Most the people in my friend group INHALE cringe proudly and also feel frustrated that they "aren't allowed" to like cutesy or playful or UwU stuff without getting flak for "making the community look bad." There's a lot of in group vs outgroup cringe debate with this creator it seems. A lot of the ingroup is saying the above: "You're making the community look bad, and other people will use it against us." I think that they could show that energy in creating or promoting queer content that they think is good representation or even better doing something local or otherwise to protect queer and specifically rights (if you're in the US there's probably a bill trying to limit trans rights in your state that Refrainbow has nothing to do with) instead of going on a hate campaign of some creator most people have not heard of. The other things you brought up were the real concerns people might have with engaging with the content, but it gets drowned out by people arguing in group about whether or not someone should be "able" to like a thing. It doesn't seem like fujoshi bait. It just seems like a typical self-insert fantasy without stakes. The only real critique i have with the comic itself (not Ray, who I wouldn't defend indiscriminately) is that I wish they wrote it with a bit more depth like you said. Other than that it's just basic pastel comfort food. I have no idea how so many people can have such INTENSE hatred for something so simple. Would love to study to psychology of haters but don't have the energy. 😂

Skimming the comments and I am not sure if anyone else mentioned this, but femboy does not exclusively refer to trans people. Some gendernonconforming men and/or queer twinks also use this term. I'm a trans man and in trans spaces ive seen gender noncomforming or femme presenting trans men use this (dated one even), transwomen either jokingly or refering to pre-transition, and all host of nonbinary folks use this. The Vtuber Shoto seems to be fine with this term and seems to be friends with Ray. As for trap, its not an anime exclusive term unfortunately. I'd refer you to Contra's video on that term that's long, more nuanced, and i think got demonetized despite her censoring and being in that community. I don't know who he refered to or if they're friends. I don't really care to check but I absolutely have met, dated, or been friends with trans women who use the term and also allow their friends/SOs to use the term (always for the jokes or a term of endearment). Like how my whole friend group of queer trans folks call each other tr*nny f*gs but not necessarily as a punchline but casually. Idk if that was what he did though, just putting that out there. A lot of people seem to misgender this creator or not know he's trans and have a lot of hate from one of those two assumptions.

1 and 2 part was amazing. you helped me FINALLY to understand, why people just hate this comic. because i see a lot in internet about how "boyfriends" is gross and everyone who read or have read it is cringe and i was like... i just start to read this comic wtf?? i have never saw popular or viral things on my own, so i just wanted to make up for what I missed. and i didn't really see problematic things such as proship etc. so thanks again for you content, it is informative and helped me to understand easily. off topic, but you seem like a comfort person. i absolutely enjoyed watching.

As a transmasc person, I think that the word femboy being offensive really deppends on the context. For example, if I'm chatting with friends and one of them calls me a femboy, we'll just laught it off as it's lighthearted, but if some weirdo calls a trans woman (for example) a femboy (implying they're a man dressing more femenine) then that could be pretty offensive. Ik I'm late but still, great video aswell.

awhile ago, I read this comic because I had found the nsfw account that Rey owns 😭an account I followed retweeted Rey's work for it (I followed weird people, don't ask), I had read it once when I was twelve and when I found out it was universally hated, I stopped reading. But a couple years later, I read it again. The jokes were cringe, they use a lot of 2020-2021 humor like poggers, and baka and stuff like that. I still hate the book, it's cringe.

Really good video. The biggest issue with the current art community that has gone on for ages is the fact art isnt seen as an extension of a person, an attempt at connecting with the viewer or a simple fun drawing, all of it is now seen as "eye candy", something to just to jug in ur brain and look at pretty colours! There is nothing wrong with simple fun art with pretty bright colours on cute characters, the problem is thinking all art is meant to be like that and believing all art should be on that level skillwise.

To be honest, it sounds a little strange to me when you suggest that people typically don't find things like vacuum cleaners appealing. Like, I grew up with cartoons, books, and other media that depicted items and animals as having human-like characteristics, so I have a tendency to give them personalities and see them kind of as human-like myself. For example, I can get attached to one particular crayon in my MASSIVE crayon collection just because of its color, and eventually give it like a personality or something. The same thing with animals, like, who doesn't imagine their pet like a silly little guy who thinks about silly things.. ? I dunno, I thought it's just how humans work, everything can talk and think and be sentient if you really want it too, at least in your head, lol. So it's not really surprising for me that the guy put the lipstick on a vacuum cleaner & stuff. Also with the dead people.. I have this weird relationship with the things that scare me, because my brain gets confused, and my big FEAR emotion turns into a "LOVE" emotion, like, I feel uncomfortable and nervous, but kind of attracted at the same time. And it's not just me, it's like a real thing the brain does sometimes, so I'm used to human brains and feelings being strange and perplexing for the one experiencing them as well as everyone around them. 💀 (Note: I'm not really talking about the sexual attraction here, and I am NOT attracted to dead people or vacuum cleaners myself, I just felt like talking about it a little bit here, lol!) The video is great though, love your art AND content!

gonna preface this by saying the n word is always a racist term and its never okay for a non black person to say it. my friend in indonesia when she vents to me abt her classmates, she says that the use of slurs is incredibly normal. the use of the n word is just something they use like nothing, and all of them use it. in britain, a 14 year old will definitely know better not to use the n word, and so they use the f slur and t slur instead. in indonesia it seems that the n word is the equvalent of the f slur i guess? in that everyone at school will use it. so i dont really think an indonesian 14 year old would know better. but still, its a very bad thing.

i really enjoyed your take on internet art culture and how the over commercialization of art has elevated "prettiness" over basically any other aspect of art... for me, as ive gotten older ive felt less pressured to participate in social media, so its sad to learn how tough it is out there for younger artists... art is more of a special interest for me, and as ive gained more skills ive also become less interested in work that focuses only on prettiness or naturalism as well, but its harder to find conceptually interesting work on algorithmically driven social media platforms where normies (for lack of a better term) drive style popularity... the one thing i dont agree on is the utility of tracing. its fine as an amusing activity, but learning art (or any skill) by rote memorization is not as good for your brain as actually doing the work of understanding theory or physical properties

People complain when I as an Indian person will say something like “hey you shouldn’t say that, you not black that can be offensive” I always get “your not black why does it affect you!?” Maybe because racism can stretch beyond being black? It gets very annoying as someone who does also experience racism :/

I agree with this video moreso than your last one about the comic- I personally don’t care for mindless fluff. It’s cute, but not for me. Can I appreciate that it gives queers a cozy, safe space? Yes. But can I also admit it’s painfully mid? Also yes. Both your videos gave me some more perspective about it all, so thank you for that 🫶🏼
@ZoesChoice3 ай бұрын
I want to offer my perspective as someone who doesn’t care for Boyfriends but also thinks that some of the hate it gets is unnesicary. For context, I am an LGBT as well. First, with the BTS nsfw thing- He was a minor himself, and I think holding him to the same moral standard to a 14-year-old as a grown adult is weird. He was a kid and it’s been MANY years since, he also apologized. “But he still follows people who say weird things about bts” okay but is he actively drawing BTS porn? If not, then this is a non-issue. Second, with saying the n-word- you are correct that POC are under no obligation to forgive when someone does something bigoted. HOWEVER, you also shouldn't judge other people for not holding a grudge like you do. People should be allowed to be fans of this guy without being accused of "supporting a racist.". Saying one bigoted thing ONE time does not a racist make. Third, the "he follows proshippers" thing- this is such a stupid accusation to make. Most people follow others without checking their profile and it's truly usually not that deep. There is no true proof of him following or supporting proshippers, and the tweet he made about Nerd being a proshipper was very obviously a cheeky joke. Also, I don’t vibe with the claim that he seems to “attract proshippers” or that most of his fans are proship. Like, be so for real- EVERY fandom is going to have a portion of it that’s gross/prpship. That’s just how fandom is. I don’t think it’s any more or any less with the Boyfriends fandom. As for his veiws on proshipping- he doesn’t seem to be one, he simply thinks that there is nuance to the “fiction affects reality” argument. Having a nuanced opinion on a topic or community doesn’t nessicarily mean they 100% support that community. I’m not even a pro-shipper, but I agree that the topic of fiction vs reality is a complicated one. As for him being into shota/loli- there’s no proof of this. People will pull any accusation out of their ass in an effort to ruin someone’s reputation. It’s sickening. I’m a CSA survivor and false accusations like that are so fucking gross. As for the words “trap” and “femboy” they are transphobic if you use it against a trans woman, however it is PERFECTLY FINE to use as long as you’re using those words to describe cis men only. I think getting mad at calling cis male crossdressers “traps” or “femboys” is a HUGE reach. Also there’s no real proof of refrainbow calling trans women traps or femboys. It’s all just more slanderous accusations. In conclusion, I want to made a case that Refrainbow isn’t as bad of a person as ppl are making him out to be. Is it valid to not want to support him, even if he did those things a long time ago? Yes. Absolutely. But what’s NOT valid is trying to make him seem like an actively problematic person, and not just accept that he is a person who has maybe done a couple distasteful things many years ago.

This webtoon is actually my favourite comic :') not sure why, but my small brain has trouble reading anything, so the really pretty art style (I really like pastel) and the lack of plot makes it nice and light. Thx for talking about the controversy though, I actually had zero clue any of that was going on. Many of these points did explain a bunch of things though (oof) Still my fav comic though
