Lacquer us SUPER THICK!!!! it dries FAST! you MUST THIN ITi finally got a decent finish with an 80% thinner and 20% Lacquer. Temp was only around 65°F !!! ...if you need to take an edge off or a drip, just use straight thinner, but carefully.

You can use a brown paper bag instead of the sandpaper and get the same, or better results, without the risk of burning through your finish.

Hello Jeremy: Thanks for your interest and for your question. YES, I offer a detailed set of plans for all the pieces and a hardware list. I sell them in my stores on Etsy and Amazon. Etsy offers the digital downloadable version as well as the paper mailed version. Amazon offers the paper mailed version only. Cause i can't figure out how to offer it digitally on Amazon. $15.00 in both stores. Hope that helps. Sincerely, Steve - Timber Jacks Woodshop

I am a furniture maker. Finishing is the hard part, if you ask me. I can see that the grain on your project was not completely filled. For a humidor, most are lined with unfinished Spanish Cedar. The reason Spanish Cedar is used is because it is unique in that it does not expand with moisture. Because of the moisture, it is necessary to seal the inside of the box (under the liner) with a couple coats of shellac. It is also good practice to seal the outside of porous woods also. 10 to 15 coats of lacquer (sprayed) usually follows with sanding between every 3 or so coats. After the coats are cured (a couple of days, depending on environmental conditions). Sanding with a block with 800, then 1200, then 1500 grit paper, followed with rotten stone and oil on a rag, with give you a finish like glass, and just as reflective (like a piano). It gives the project a "wow" factor. It was hard to see in the video, but it looked like the hinge was well set in the mortise, A hard part for some. You did a good job on the box. I especially liked the perforated divider.

Found you by researching a wooden handled press for herbs and carrot pulp. I don't like any of the stainless offerings online and was hoping for one something like this. Imagine a filled nut milk bag (similar to paint strainer bag) in a food safe plastic container and nest another smaller container into it to pressure the pulp into giving up the last juices. The bottom one would need a spout to let it pour out but I think this is close! Nice work, simple and earthy look that fits with my décor and always handy! WIN_WIN!

awesome design! maybe it would be easier if the crushing platform allows the air to come out of the can. Maybe you should try drilling a hole in the the center of the crushing platform?
@stevenosarczuk1203
@stevenosarczuk1203 7 жыл бұрын
Nemanja Manjencic Interesting consideration. I have never had a problem trapping air in the can while crushing it however, I like your idea. Instead of drilling a hole in the platform maybe adding a spike on it to hold the can and poke a hole in the can when it's crushed might be a better option. Thoughts?
@NemanjaManjencic
@NemanjaManjencic 7 жыл бұрын
Steven Osarczuk you're probably right, there are no significant issues with letting excess air get out of the can. a spike would be a cool feature, but I'm concerned that it would sometimes make the can stick to it, or maybe pierce then can after it'd been crushed :) so, all is good the way it is now :)

Based solely on what we first see prior to rubbing out procedures, it appears you didn't use any filler prior to applying the finish. I'd be interested in finding out from you whether that's true or not, and also, is you did use a filler, what brand and type. Thanks for your courage in sharing your thoughts and procedures with us and all the best with your woodworking projects.
@stevenosarczuk1203

Ha!. I did not use a filler. Very nice catch! I should have...most definately but since that video I do use fillers in my finer projects. The finish is just so much nicer... it was my intent on this piece to leave the purple heart raw but in hind sight filler would not have affected it at all and would have just made the finish better. The fillers I use are varied but some here in my shop are crystalac, Timber Mate and I've even used sheet rock spackle. I'm working on another humidor currently made of African Mahogany and Lace Wood with a full Spanish Cedar interior. I am filling the grain on this one.. I'm decided now if I should enhance the mahogany grain with a dye or just leave it... Thanks for the question... and again...good eye... Sincerely, Steve - Timber Jacks Woodshop

You have to wet sand with 400 until you almost get to bare wood and put a couple more coats on and wet sand it again until you can't see any grain. Fill the grain. Wet sand up to 2000 then swirl mark remover than car wax.

Beautifully done. I would use a little trick, in order to make it easier to crush the can. (I'll try to explain my idea but, since English is not my mother language and I have little knowledge of the lingo used in woodcraft, bear with me) We know that if we start crushing the can sideways, the top-down force required is considerably reduced. I would place a couple of small vertical levers, in the lateral panels of the crushing chamber (pivoting axis front to back), spring loaded so the upper end of the lever would be inside the chamber, beneath the plunger. I would change the plunger bottom to create a truncated diamond shape, so when moving down it would apply horizontal force moving the top end of the levers apart. That movement would cause the bottom end of the levers to come inside the chamber and dent the can sides. After the broadest part of the diamond passes the top end of the levers, the spring on each one would bring them near, clearing the chamber to allow the plunger easily crush the weakened can structure. The diamond shape would facilitate the up movement of the plunger, thru the side levers, during the reset phase.

AnJo888 thank you for your kind words and I have a good visual idea of what you are explaining so you did well there also. The improvements you are suggesting have much value however, the practical application of building these improvements into the current design would be cost prohibitive... MEANING.... I wouldn't be able to sell the Can Crusher at the price needed to recoup the cost of time and labor involved. If this was purely a design project your improvements sound fantastic. But sell these across the country and that design element you are speaking about would make the unit unaffordable. At least by my standards. Thank you so much for the time and thought you put to my design...

Hello josvanr it is actually the scratches themselves that make the piece shiny and smooth. you must however, use a fine sandpaper when rubbing out the lacquer. No less than a 320 and even consecutively higher is better. The beauty of lacquer is that you don't have to sand with the grain however, sanding should create scratches in the surface not detectable groove. if you can feel them with a finger nail then I would suggest a higher grit sandpaper. 400, 600, 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000. wet sand with water and a little liquid soap.
@josvanr
@josvanr 8 жыл бұрын
doesnt the scratches from the rubbing (in direction of the grain) make the surface very scratch prone? ie if you run your fingernail over the surface, perpendicular to the rubbing direction, do you see a mark?
