Ken: thank you for you interest and comments. These are great ideas! I did consider the "spring lift" system for the handle but decided to keep the at rest position in a closed state keeping the handle closer to the unit for a smaller profile when mounted. I don't have too much experience with the 40oz cans so I'm not sure how tall they are but I believe my Crusher can accommodate them. a regular can is about 5" and my Crusher can lift to almost a full 8". I'm thinking that might do it but I'm not positive. thanks again. Steve.

If you increase the height of your side pieces and the guide rail along with an increased length of the tray lifter assembly, you could add a small spring to keep the handle in the up position and also be able to crush taller cans, maybe even a mega 40 oz beverage can ... just a thought ... good design and I like the lift assembly to "deposit" the crushed cans in the trash can ...

Hmmm...could you create [wooden] gears that force something to pinch the can and then release it as the plate comes down? In that way you can make the handle much shorter because you would need minimal force to crush the can. Well, that is a lot of trouble to crush cans, isn't it? Anyway, you are a very talented craftsman.
