You fought well! 👏 I think shooting in slightly overcast weather is even harder to determine exposure settings... but you still got so many nice shots & great video~! & Film stock to try → Ilford SFX 200

Thanks 😬 Yeah, overcast does add some difficulty, though I think most photos turned out fine, exposure wise, until it got dark. I’ll check out that Ilford film! So far I've only tried their XP2.

today I shot ten photos on Kodak gold 200. the realization that I had spent like $2.70 on that alone was kind of jarring. it really makes you take each shot carefully and choose your photos wisely
@jamesford_jp

Exactly. You're spending money on each shot, and it really adds up over time. Makes you also more considerate of what and how you're shooting. With digital, once you own the camera, all the photos are free….

it's funny, for some reason the video was set to 720p and I was thinking, "these photos don't look very good," so I checked what it was at. when I realized I could set it to 4k I had to restart the video. much better!

Question: because of the price and effort, does it make you feel like the shots should be "precious?" I wonder if there's a way to detatch from that. Like, "just shoot the thing" kind of sentiment. I don't know. The cost and my lack of skill is why I'm not shooting film. Curious to know your take.
@jamesford_jp
@jamesford_jp 5 күн бұрын
Cost is definitely an issue. It almost feels like a treat to shoot film… kinda like going to a nice restaurant every once and a while 😅 Now perhaps the more you just start doing it, the more “normal” it may begin to feel and it might be easier to detach yourself from it. Hard to say though, as I only shoot film a handful of times a year and I am perfectly happy being a digital shooter. I’ve actually been very interested in Pentax’s new half frame camera, as that turns a roll of 36 into 72 shots.

Some really juicy shots there. I *just* went out with a 35mm lens today and I've been using a 20mm before that, so holy cats did I have to readjust my shooting. Yeah, I get what you mean. Sticking to the same focal length for a long time can make it feel really awkward and hard to use another, especially if they’re in the same category (35 mm to 28 mm for example). Good to change things up from time to time.

A few thoughts on the images in this photo walk, James: 3:37 Your patience in waiting resulted in a very interesting photo. And 3:57 the little cat - it's cute, how trusting it looks. 4:23 well timed too. And the cool reflections: the bulbous and tube-like color variations made 5:12 and 5:14 seem almost three-dimensional to me. But I've often noticed that these types of images trigger this optical effect in me. 5:41 - I find this narrow little alley a visual highlight. It looks really great to me with all the details - including the prospect of getting some miso soup ;-) - I can look at it in great detail, especially on my big TV screen. But I also really like the following photos at night - wonderful with the many colors and lights. 6:48 Wow!! I agree with you that it looks much cooler at night. The interplay of the different colors in the nighttime atmosphere. I like the beautiful dress 8:26 of the lady walking in the middle! And last but not least: I really had to smile when I saw you sitting there, squeezed in and tied up with the 'dark equipment' over the light shirt. It was very humorous how you - not yet fully recovered from the illness - sat in front of the camera, strapped down and deprived of your freedom. As if you had been tied to the chair by strangers' hands. I hope you understand the humor in my words. Sometimes I'm not sure whether I write everything correctly in English, as I could perhaps express it in a more nuanced way in my native language. I really enjoyed the whole presentation! Thank you and get well soon - best wishes - Monika

Hehe I’m glad you enjoyed the humor at the end! I certainly felt like I was strapped down to my chair by a stranger! As at that point I hadn’t really left the house in 4 or 5 days and was going a bit stir crazy from doing nothing but play video games and lay in bed as I was sick 😅😂 Shinjuku is a neat place just by how vibrant the colors come to life at night. Even during the day it's a cool place to walk around and explore, but after dark is when the city really comes to life. I was actually feeling very rusty though shooting “regular” street photos as I'd spent the past 2 months only shooting events and festivals. So I picked Shinjuku as it's a very easy place to shoot. You can always find something there 😂 Anyway, have a great rest of your week, モニカ☺️

Oh, Spanish-inspired guitar music in the background of the video! And as a musical contrast, birdsong during your walk in nature! ;-) It was fun again to look over your shoulder at this festival spectacle. The many different, bright colors, especially in the night shots, it seemed as if there were some that hadn't even been invented yet. You took very good documentary photos. Pleasant atmosphere in the darkness of the evening with the many light sources in between, lively, very close, sometimes you could also capture individual faces - almost like portraits. Like for example at 7:05 or here at 8:00 the man who turns to the side while he has to lift something heavy. Then also this facial expression in the middle at 8:05 and 8:17 a very nice black and white photo with focus on the face! And again briefly about your walk in nature: On the way, while you were talking and had your mouth open, you covered your daily protein requirement just like that ;-). Thanks for showing - and best wishes - モニカ (A little signature I learned recently) 😉

I have this setup with the a7iv; it's amazing but there are a few annoying things with the pocket 3. I use an android and the app is complete garbage, I can't even get it to connect; my other complaint is that it is not weather resistant (rainy season in Japan) so I find myself not using it most days. Other than that, it really is an amazing device.

Hi James, today I was able to take the time to watch your Sanja Matsuri video and give some feedback. You definitely managed to take some great photos in the crowds that were there, especially on the second day with many outstanding portraits. It was very interesting to watch. I did a little research online to find out what was going on in Tokyo during those days so I could understand it. Those pictures/tattoos on the men's bodies, my goodness! What courage they have to get such large areas inked. But of course, they are very proud of it and quite happy to pose to be captured in photos. After "looking over your shoulder", I thought of similar celebrations in many countries around the world, depending on their worldview or religious rules - with very specific set rituals performed on some days of the year. For example, I once experienced Semana Santa week in Spain - the Christian Holy Week before Easter. I was traveling in several cities in Andalusia and saw hundreds of people taking part in these ritualized processions that stem from deep-rooted popular piety. And sometimes it was not without danger to be standing on the edge and yet in the middle of the “hustle and bustle”, because the people standing and walking so close together almost took each other’s breath away. Finally, please excuse my leap of thought - greetings Monika

Hi Monika ☺️ You won’t see the Tattooed guys near the main festival area since they are Yakuza members. It’s one of the few times you can see them out in public since various laws passed since the 90s have made life as a Yakuza far more difficult and their numbers have drastically decreased from its peak in the 80s and 90s. And yes, I would love to see and experience more festivals around the world! I’ve seen videos about various Christian festivals across Europe and they look just as fascinating as what we have here in Japan. I hope to make my way over there someday-hopefully sooner rather than later 😅 Have a great weekend!

First of all, thank you for handling the camera - your "steady hand" when you film from a standstill is so typical and remarkable. This gives the viewer enough time to relax and enjoy the moving scenes. (By the way: did you not use a tripod here either?) This video contains very interesting insights into this part of Tokyo with the resulting great photographs. A special motif at 0:52 or this one at 1:46 with the many confusing lines that seem to touch each other. At 3:08 I had to smile because the name "Grimm" is very well known here in my country for a traditional bakery. Maybe they have a branch in Tokyo? Next time you pass by there, you can maybe ask if they are from Germany ;-). 6:07 also a very nice picture at night with the moving train on the bridge. And I also like the film perspective at 6:34 ! 7:48 a great picture! Oh, and last but not least, I would also like to mention that I really like this "peephole" perspective at 8:17 :-). You don't see something like that every day ;-). Once again a very nice choice of background music! Hope you're well, James. Best wishes from Europe - Monika
