What High School did you attend in Japan? ASIJ? CAJ? I grew up in Taiwan and we got to play the sports teams from some of the Intl schools in Japan. It was cool to hear your experiences and thoughts that mirror mine in so many ways, other than different Asian countries.

This is why as a Bangladeshi American I never showed any interest in learning Japanese. I country that assumes their language is inferior to English, why would I bother learning that language? I speak English as first, Bengali and now learning Spanish. I'm sure I can get more Japanese girls with my English than if I tried to learn broken Japanese so it's pointless. Specially when locals would say stuff like, "then why don't you speak your native language, why speaking Japanese?" Be like "bitch go get my sashimi and stfu"

Harmony is awesome. She still seems very Japanese, but an idealized version. She seemed like she had escaped the shackles of Japanese culture.

I didn't think she was Japanese at all. I mean, there is always a subculture in Japan to make sense of your identity, but she's transcended all of that well into the stratosphere. Her mannerisms, her confidence, her thinking, but most noticeably, her total lack of self-consciousness. She's Singaporean. She'd actually fit into Canadian culture quite seamlessly.

@@joshuasjapanchannel Crazy because in 2009 I knew some millennials headed to Japan to teach English and as disrespectful as THEY were of other people's cultures they knew they didn't want to frighten the kids with a beard. Westerners are thought of as dirty by the Japanese and that's one of the reasons why.

I recently watching you at Newsline In Depth NHK World 😂 about your experience rejected by landlord because they are considered you as a foreigner. Quite have same experience here in Indonesia especially in Bali. Landlord are objected with foreigner who made their properties broke or dirty and they are very annoying screaming at night while drunk

Thats also geman culture, right, where they are reserved, secretive, they say only what they want to say, while in other cultures they are very expressive. I've heard how German are cold poeple, not expressive, won't look warm even vut for Germans they have enough room and thats all they want to express and thats fine wiht them. Other western cultures might be the most opposite.

These kinds of interviews and videos really hold my heart, thank you. I've been teaching english to japanese students as an asian person, too;, and i'm trying to make sense of the japanese culture because of my constant intereaction wiht japanese adults and children, they think and act that way. Your videos have given me insight though i want to know more. I sitll have to see your sister's videos and you have very intelligent quesitons for your viewers, just drive me crazy. I would like to see all other videos of those other two here, so i'll be watching all your many videos of each one of you. Great, great one!!! I can't believe this is free, but dont charge us, LOL> LOL.

I love it when Japanese people spend time abroad and then come back and see that a lot of the things they have accepted in their society as normal or shoganai is actually toxic and damaging.

I can relate to the feeling, it's so hard finding something short term here in London that isn't above £1000. Moving out of my current place just because it's way too expensive lol, I will miss it because it's so well connected but it is what it is

I am wondering if Japanese also thinks she is Russian like they think about OrientalPearl all the time. Or is the blonde hair/blue eyes combination making Japanese think of Russia?

What's extraordinary, the sister almost sounds like she has a Japanese accent when speaking English! Or maybe it's my imagination? And here's something to consider: you say "We look British". Not to split hairs, but "British" these days encompasses a variety of "looks" ;-)

I just found this channel and it’s so interesting! I was born in the UK to a British father and Hungarian mother, but two weeks after I was born we moved to Kyoto where I lived for the first year of my life. My dad was offered a great job in Kobe but he wanted to be near his family so we moved back to the UK and I grew up there. I sometimes think about what my life would have been like had we never left Japan. Thanks for the video and for sharing your story!

You're both so interesting and it's so interesting to hear what you've gone through. I think it must be so hard to not ever seem to blend in, in Japan, just because of your outward looks. I find myself wanting to go to Japan just to see how clean it is! I would imagine that no other countries are quite the same that way. I've seen Joshua on other channels, talking about being looked at as a foreigner in Japan (Oriental Pearl, I think) and she wasn't brought up there, but is married to a Japanese man and has lived there a long time; she gets the same treatment as you both do, you'll never look Japanese and it's a very closed culture when all they seem to think is that any person that doesn't look Japanese, is American! So funny; they definitely do need to broaden their horizons! Good luck with your UK adventure, I hope that it gets easier to be there. (from Sandi)

Just found your channel via your sister's vid! I'm Japanese American, want to visit Japan. Raised speaking Nihongo, struggle a bit with English. Kedo Yonsei desu, so my Japanese is terribly old-fashioned. Very curious what it's like to be there as a perceived outsider? Probably similar to being Asian in America even if you were born here?

the reason such a question is asked is to find out if a future employee will be a long time or short term employee. the time and cost involved investing in that employee is a big deal. this question clarifies to the business the employees' future plans. though the US suggest that such questions not be asked because it may be taken as discriminatory. this is a stupid law- you can be hired or not hired for any reason. Looking for an astronaut to go into space in one year... can you be asked if you are pregnant ? stupid if you cant be asked. Planning on working for a year and getting married when your spouse's pre approved promotion comes in 10mths? your employer just spent thousands of dollars and 6mths training you for medical billing and you leave because you were planning on getting married and start a family... many more reasons why such questions should be asked then the reason they shouldnt be

The wife gives birth, gets maternity leave then goes back to work. It is not hard to comprehend. Almost every other highly developed nation does that. A woman can balance a job and a child if the husband is being a proper father. Not a money bag, a father.

Thanks to the both of you for a thoughtful and illuminating conversation. I know that Justin mentioned that he feels like he has been influenced by and identifies with multiple cultures, such as Japanese, American, UK and Singapore. I totally agree with him on the point that with the advent of the internet and globalisation, increasingly many people are going to be able to identify with more than one culture and be comfortable with more than one cilture. Just my personal opinion, but if Justin has served National Service in Singapore, he is always welcome in Singapore, wherever in the world he chooses to stay that he feels the most comfortable. He always seems to have served as an officer, which is more challenging than the normal experience. There are pros and cons to National Service, which is a totally seperate story. I hope that if Justin flies on SIA and is landing at Changi Airport, he knows that the "welcome home" message also applies to him. All the best, Justin. お元気でね 😄

Unless race demographics changes drastically, you don't look like Japanese so regular people of Japan assumes that you're not Japanese. And why do these people or half/mixed race people talk like they need validation of your identity from others? It doesn't end there. So many foreign looking people with fluent Japanese skill are making fun of native population and I really don't like it. Yes, their reaction may look weird, immature or whatever but those are not conscious reactions, meaning you can't criminalize their action which didn't come from free will. The mechanism is so different from "I've always hated yellow or black people". As long as people like you keep making those videos, stereotypes get reinforced and innocent people get called out as racist without concrete evidence. It could lead to a mischaracterization for the sake of being who they are. Was your ancestor killing POWs and eating them alive? Was your ancestor experimenting on various non-Japanese humans with biological agents? During that time across the pacific, all the Japanese-Americans were rounded up and sent to internment camps. Other Americans didn't know it and just hated Japs after the Pearl Harbor. It's like seeing someone hating Nazis so seriously, and people sometimes show their evil side thinking about the horror of the wartime past. Others react the same way to the Unit 731. I remember you Joshua. You appeared on one of the OrientalPearl's stupid KZfaq shorts video and your interview was dumb. I got no beef with neither of you but Russian women who was infected with syphilis was living inside the walls of Unit 731. Those women had little children living with them in that facility. I just think people like you use "I'm Japanese" card only when it suits your purpose. Kids get bullied all the time but you can grow out of it, depending on the severity of course. I get flak from people sometimes and it's unlikely that this'll end any time soon. I just don't get why y'all have to bitch and whine about little things and acting like your educating others. I cut some slack for blacks but you? Seriously dude?
