It looked like you did a good job except that you could have redone the Jappaning instead of using paint.

Firstly - I am grateful for the video, nicely done!!! I'd add a couple of words of caution - especially for beginners considering the technology: 1. This method is risky IF a drill stand or tilted bandsaw are not high enough prevision grade. If you are not sure about drilling at 90.0 degrees - better drill first, insert blade (with split dowell/stick or undercured epoxy method) and do markings and shaping after. 2. Agree with comment before: the horn 'bolster' can be made with much less elbow greece.. if done separately AND also - drilled liberally from backside. Again, ref. Splt stick method. Once again, thank you and Like for many other things!!

No Idea what brand of paint you used. You did not mention cleaning the acrylic sheet prior to painting. I could see finger prints, smudges cleaned that should have been off. When you exposed the other side, you didn't remove the protective film to show the actual finished product.

I made one very similar to this out of Zebrawood but I had trouble drilling out the blade hole deep enough. It's best to pre drill the hole before gluing it together.

Do not flatten the sole on a ceramic tile. These tiles are notoriously unflat. Those stripes on the sandpaper indicate high spots. You risk ending up with a "wavy" sole. Instead flatten it on a granite plate or on the top of a table saw.

Nice job. Just did one myself. As a warning to others I left the plane three days in white vinegar to eat the rust but it also ate a lot of the plane as well, took a whole day of sanding to get the sole back to the point where there is a good 80% bright metal and the remaining pits don’t affect function. It also ate some of the screw threads in the sole for the tote and front knob so I’ll have to remedy that too.
@raizt15962 жыл бұрын
He is using evaporust, which should not eat the metal, but thanks for the tip.

Nice work, I just refinished a 5 1/4 Stanley Bailey yesterday. Same exact process. The week before that No 4 too. I did so much sanding, and when I saw you put the stripper on, I really slapped myself in the head. I literally had it on my work bench in front of me and never thought to use it. So anyhow, What kind of diamond stone is that you are using? Could you link it maybe?

Great job but I have one question. That Japanning looked to be just fine. Why remove good Japanning for thin spray paint?
@solosniper863 жыл бұрын
I believe he removed it because the newer Stanleys like this actually have much thinner japanning and you could see bare metal in certain spots. I restored a No5 in similar condition. I noticed a huge difference in japanning between the type 20s and my dad's type 15 that I restored for him.
@gavinhouliston3 жыл бұрын
@@solosniper86 Newer Stanley's use paint. Not japaning. I'm sure I was informed of that just recently as most of their new planes can have all of the interior colour removed with paint stripper whereas true japaning would not be effected
