It was kinda a train wreck, none of the parts sounded together in the middle of the piece, the backing track overpowered everything else near the end

Mr. Psathas wrote this with an in-ear met, meaning the parts will always be together - the independence of the parts may seem out-of-line, but that is the intention of Mr. Psathas. Regarding the backing track and its balance, that is also intentional; the piece is atmospheric, and there is not a clear cut melody towards the end. I believe the focus is more on the rhythmic and harmonic interplay between the backing track and written parts throughout, and especially so at the end. For something a bit more clear and pure - if that’s what you’re looking for, I recommend Mr. Psathas’ “Kyoto” for percussion quintet, without audio track.
