Spot on, Devon! I've sorta put my rig together backwards. I've always had emphasis on good gear while having some treatment in my home recording studio, but it wasn't until this year that I really broke down and invested some good, thick bass traps and other acoustic panels, and just a few months back I upgraded my monitors from the "baby" Focals to PMC. (Almost got bigger Focals but PMC won out). Now my "expensive" every thing else-converters, preamps, summing/monitor control, etc. sound much clearer and accurate. Just plain better.

probably not. Maybe the 6" version works better in that situation. But even then, maybe it's too much. My room may be just big enough. Those Mackies I talked about might be perfect. The question will be at the bottom end. A small room can't convey that accurately so you need to check it in a car. That's all. These great monitors only make reference easier in a single listen. And that is the point of this whole video. It's all possible. No matter what you have, but you just need take more time with less. But you will get there of you know where you want to go.

@@thanos4480 I wouldn't sa there is no reason. Good gear is awesome, and studios also are better off investing in growth to remain competitive, plus all that investment then doesn't get taxed the way profit does. Good gear sounds better, but cheap gear is good enough to get the job done. The musical ideas and performance matter far more. Those monitors you see were very expensive and they matter. But again, people have done better with less.

Interesting comparion, thank you. Takeaway to me is: unless you have everything else really figured out (room, instruments, mics, performance) and can easily shell out the thousands of dollars for high end hardware, there's no point. The difference is virtually neglectable or at least highly disproportionate to the difference in price. If you're not coming from a 1073 which you are trying to emulate but instead use a clean signal (like from the ID44) and make it sound as best as you can with stock plugins, you'll lose a lot less sleep and also get a solid result. Nobody will ever tell you anyway that your recordings suck because no 1073 or whatever. Also interesting in this context is the "compressor scam" series by AP Mastering in which the guy demonstrates with a self-written plugin that compressors basically don't differ that much - it's more in the settings. He also has some quite revealing info about EQ.

I'm so glad I found this video! I also have a C24 on PT11HD Native on a customised HP Z400, and I have no plans to change/upgrade it - it's reliable! I too hark from earlier times as a freelance engineer during the 1980s, loving the huge Neve desks for orchestral stuff, and SSLs, and Studer A80s and A800s, and the glorious analog outboard gear. I still marvel that my current setup has so few limitations compared to the old days, and after discovering the somewhat sterile capabilities of Pro Tools, the C24 brought back the tactile joy of 'riding the faders'! Nowadays my studio mostly makes soundtracks for AI movies, which are edited on Davinci Resolve on a Mac Studio M2 Max - I really enjoy having a foot in both time zones, so-to-speak - a DAW and control surface expression of the 'good old days' of recording and mixing, as well as cutting-edge AI graphics and NLE video-making. I just wish my stack of old 2-track and 24-track tapes took up less space, and I had more time to digitise them!

I will stay with my 4.1 system. Purchase a great set of front LR speakers. Dump the centre channel. Get an ok Rear RL speakers and a good sub that is all you need. People forget that the only reason for the centre channel is the anchor speech to the screen for those that are sitting to the far left and right such as in a big theatre. We for the most part don't need that in our homes. We don't need to listen to those horrible sounding horn speakers in the theatre where DB is all that matters. We can do so much better in our homes. So the next level after Atmos would be what. How many stupid speakers are we going to "need". How about a sub for each speaker? And a buttkicker in your chairs to "enhance" those supper lows. Wait a minute each speaker should also have lights that can be controlled also to mimic the lighting of what was going on. Things are gone stupid insane.

I do realise there is actual atmos music. But really it is a cinema audio format. I love Atmos for my movies and I have the speakers above where they are meant to be, none of this upfiring which does not give you true atmos. Sure some artists could mix in atmos, or even 5.1 audio but essentially these are cinema audio formats. Sure some music can sound good that way but again mostly music sounds better in stereo. What I am saying if you are using the bouncing off the walls and ceilings you are not hearing actual atmos, it is NOT a true representation of the sound format (Atmos). Also for you to say 5.1 etc never took off..I respectfully disagree. Many people nowadays have an atmos or 5.1 home cinema set up. Including myself. BTW I can make my music into 5.1, I don't have the software to create an atmos track for my music (yes I am a musician too). I have to add this too, yes 3D tvs fell off the face of the earth but the older audio sound formats have almost disappeared off the face of the earth, for a completely different reason, it is simply progression.. ....the reason barely any one uses pro logic (which you needed to be receiving a nicam stereo signal to your reveicer, to get pro logic at the time), is progression. As after original pro logic, they got it better, so then dolby digital comes along, then HD audio formats over taken dolby digital with true HD and HD master audio. Now it's Atmos, which like the pro logic needing a nicam signal, the atmos needs that HD mster audio or Dolby true HD to get. Atmos is inbedded into these HD audo fromats BTW. But all these older audo formats did not drop off the face of the earth, it is simply progression, that is all it is. We have come a long way in home cinema audio formats since the pro logic days. BTW I also have the night of the opera Blu ray audio, I also have the DVD audio disc. It sounds great, the voices in the prohets song is amazing. Also war of the worlds jeff wayne SACD sounds great that way. The brothers in arms SACD by dire straits sounds absolutely brilliant....All of those contain mullti channel audio tracks and I love listening to them. BTW albeit we slightly disagree on some things you picked up a sub ;) A sound person like myself I am interested in watching your vidz. Oh and what do I think, Atmos is not a gimmick, if done correctly it gives another dimension to your sound and I noticed it straight away when I heard it. Not only is it surround sound, it is just like going outside, When you are outside you are aware of sounds coming from above you not just around you. So it gives an additional presence in the room, which I love. But all in all it is a hit and miss with music. It is just better for movies, which is hardly surprising as Atmos is actually a cinema sound format. P.S I have atmos and it is set up correctly, it sounds brilliant. Bouncing off the walls is not a true representation of the sound format.

I use a C24 with a Mac mini M1 with the latest version of PT. I have to open PT under Rosetta to fully use the c24 and uncheck the Eucon controller. It's an amazing desk, pretty much like a real console. Previously, I had a Command 8 but I barely use it since I've had only 8 faders. Now, with 24 faders, I use it all the time. Making automation with real fader instead the mouse is awesome!! I don't use the analogue part of the c24 because I have several pre-amp better than those on the c24. I just wish to use the talback function like "auto talk back" but I have to integrate it to my Apollo's system.
