Hi Greg, great video, very helpfull, thanks for sharing. What if you add some POI's points of interest to your route and you want them to display on your GPS' screen when you navigating? Once embedded to your route, how do you export them from Basecamp to you Garmin GPS. Many thanks Pedro

Thank you so much for your clear & informative video. It has taken the frustration out of directly planning a route on Base Camp. Take care & safe riding.

Hi Greg, Thnk you for sharing this. I was struggling for two days, trying to figure out how to build a custom route and then transfer that to my Zumo XT. I tried a few different ways based on youtube videos, but none of them were working. Finally, your method took care of it! I have bookmarked your video, and I intend to write down the steps for future reference. Thx t your son too. Cheers!

I was given a Garmin Zumo 396 For christmas this year. Its all mounted on my SG. Now, I am part of the group that will lead several rides this summer doing our week long stay in Maggie Valley NC. I have watched this video twice and will watch it several more time as I feel I am missing something. I have a google acct and have downloaded google maps and my google maps, and can design my routes but can not see where I can save them and transfer them to my Garman. I will be one of the leads on these rides and last year used my phone, bad idea! This year I want to not only be able to stay on the route I chose but be able to share them with my riders, (est 20-30 total) And basecamp seems impossible to get for some reason unless I am missing something. I am not a tech guru thats for sure. Help?

Dear Sir, first of all thank you for sharing. I have tried to do as you describe in your video but without any success. It works fine until the part where I am importing the .kmz file to BaseCamp, nothing happens no file is imported to BaseCamp! Have you heard about this before? Any suggestion to what I may be doing wrong? Best Regards Göran Lundell, Svedala, Skåne, Sweden

different layers created on google maps are downloaded as different tracks on basemap creating different routes. Is there any combining solution these different layers to have one route?

I'm hoping you still monitor comments on this video so that you get my huge thanks for taking the time and trouble to create this guide. I wasn't aware that google maps could be used in this way. This is a game-changer for me as I am just about to get back into taking longer trips on my motorcycle. I was so not relishing the prospect of creating routes on basecamp again. The Garmin application is so unwieldy and time consuming. And as you point out at the beginning of the video, there are all sorts of other useful advantages to trip planning with Google Maps. Superb solution! Thank you Sir.

Well done 👍👍 and very helpful. I looked quite a lot of video's how to create and to stay on a route. This is the first one that made it clear in a simple and understandable way including the pitfalls. Thanks very much 🙏.

Since your video was produced, 2018, google maps layout seems to have changed some. Those three red dots do seem to be there now. Do you know how I would locate an export command now? Eric, Black Swan Odysseys

I've watched many a video on how to achieve this, most of which bamboozled me but this one worked 1st time and is so easy to follow. It also included the best tip on what to do about recalculating the route - which explains why a recent trip back from Switzerland didn't go entirely according to plan - I thought it rerouted onto the originally planned route and not just the quickest/shortest. Brilliant work Greg, no idea how I missed this last year - will subscribe and like and if I'm ever in your neck of the woods in the States I'll buy you a pint

Thanks for the video! There are GPS guys (you are obviously one, I am also one) and there are definitely non-GPS guys. Somehow the GPS guy always gets the lead when a few guys are navigating a reasonably complex and scenic route, say, from Coeur d'Alene, ID to Yaak, MT. Then, the pressure is definitely on for the GPS guy in the lead! You really want to have that route perfectly nailed down in the planning stage, NOT when you've got four or five pals following you out in the boonies! I recommend adding a couple extra steps after you get that route into BaseCamp. Copy the route, then reduce the number of waypoints by the "motorcycle > direct > motorcycle boogie" recommended by Roger Gustavasson below. Finally, "pre-run" your route by looking at each waypoint and moving it as required to make the intended route run more smoothly (moving a waypoint past an intersection rather than at an intersection for example). This is a hassle, but worth it later on when your pals are following you on those small back roads. DAMHIK.

Greg: excellent - I went on a ride in the mountains a week ago with my Zumo XT. I rode about 40 miles on dirt, gravel, and paved roads. After the ride, decided I would like to take all of the unsaved tracks, somehow attach them all together and bring them back into Google Maps to share with a friend. I'm afraid to loose the data in the GPS, have no idea how to do this. I could try saving the individual tracks which I think is a starting point, but don't know where to go next. I have basecamp installed on my computer.

Nice video well explain. That’s exactly what I was doing since now! I was using the Garmin navigator lV since 10 years and replace it for the new Garmin XT last week. You can use it the exact same way that you do but everything will be much faster because of the CPU. But one of the very nice new option is that you can use your phone with Google and sent your map to your Garmin XT using Garmin Drive app. So now in real time on the road I can use my phone with Google to create my map and send it to the GPS and it is very fast! Some will say why you don’t use your phone all the time? Well try it and you will understand!!!

A very well explained tutorial. I've been toiling with route planning using Basecamp every time I go to Europe on the bike . At best it's a very time consuming process that occasionally works as planned, but most times it just doesn't. I'm not particularly interested or competent in the use of computers but your clear steps and explanations have enabled me to use Google Maps like I've always wanted to. My wife and me are leaving for North Western Spain in the coming days and thanks to your video I appear to have managed to create what should be a stunning route from Ojedo to Tudela. Thank you for your help!!😀

By the way, the lack of traffic you see is no illusion. Mid June 2022 had almost a shocking lack of traffic (at least on weekdays when were there) even on the big ticket roads like TOTD and BOTD and the skyway.

thankks so much. I have the same Garmin my kids bought for me in 04?05? Somewhere in there anyway, so it is seriously the worse for wear. Button covers missing that I can’t replace and so on. It helped me on my 03 RoadGlide till I swapped it (along with a bunch of money, of course) for our current TRIGLIDE ULTRA. It still sits on my handle bar and helps me with speed, fuel and so on. The Ultra has the HD nav suites on board along with their ride planner. It’s OK, but no Garmin. Thinking about getting the Zumo XT but don’t know how to move routes from HD to Garmin. Still researching……..

I followed your instructions. I try to transfer the google map to basecamp The google map track I created populates in basecamp but when I go to the "create route" step in basecamp the route created is not a copy of the track it is a direct route from the starting point to the end point. What could the issue be? Are there some other settings I need to change? Thanks

Excellent Video! I accidentally discovered a very similar method after getting very frustrated with my new Zumo and the challenges with Basecamp & Explore. I do like explore better as the route is pushed out through wireless as long as your Zomo is powered up. No need to connect to the PC and go into file transfer mode! - Thank You!
