Thanks for all the positive comments below! Much appreciated!
mymaps.google.com enables the motorcyclist to create awesome, handmade, fun, back road Tracks you can use on your GPS...but...
How do you turn that Track into an absolutely identical Route in Basecamp?
How do you get your Garmin Zumo GPS to load and run that Route faithfully to the last tenth of a mile?
How do you keep your Garmin Zumo GPS from "recalculating" your trick, curvy road, hand-made route back to a really lame, traffic-infested, boring route?
This video explains how google maps can own your Garmin once and for all.

Thanks for the video! There are GPS guys (you are obviously one, I am also one) and there are definitely non-GPS guys. Somehow the GPS guy always gets the lead when a few guys are navigating a reasonably complex and scenic route, say, from Coeur d'Alene, ID to Yaak, MT. Then, the pressure is definitely on for the GPS guy in the lead! You really want to have that route perfectly nailed down in the planning stage, NOT when you've got four or five pals following you out in the boonies! I recommend adding a couple extra steps after you get that route into BaseCamp. Copy the route, then reduce the number of waypoints by the "motorcycle > direct > motorcycle boogie" recommended by Roger Gustavasson below. Finally, "pre-run" your route by looking at each waypoint and moving it as required to make the intended route run more smoothly (moving a waypoint past an intersection rather than at an intersection for example). This is a hassle, but worth it later on when your pals are following you on those small back roads. DAMHIK.

It is definitely NOT a crude video Greg. You put a lot of time and effort into it and I for one got a lot from it. I have a Garmin which has the ‘Auto’ recalculation which can’t be switched to ‘ask me’ but your work around was new to me and will be a big help and staying on the better riding roads. Cheers and again many thanks. A big thumbs up.

I'm hoping you still monitor comments on this video so that you get my huge thanks for taking the time and trouble to create this guide. I wasn't aware that google maps could be used in this way. This is a game-changer for me as I am just about to get back into taking longer trips on my motorcycle. I was so not relishing the prospect of creating routes on basecamp again. The Garmin application is so unwieldy and time consuming. And as you point out at the beginning of the video, there are all sorts of other useful advantages to trip planning with Google Maps. Superb solution! Thank you Sir.

Great video Greg. Some of this I was aware of but your comments on automatic vs prompted recalc was spot on. I finally got that AHAH!! moment where I now see why my previous attempts sometimes worked but frequently failed. I’m now using Prompted as the method, unless I’m just wandering around to explore other route options. Thanks so much. Goldwing Tour, Zumo XT, Sena 50S, and CarPlay.

If you want to end up with a route you can recalculate, import the KMZ-file into Basecamp as described, but when you make it a route use the Activity profile "Direct". You get the choise to reduce the number of "points" because the Track concists of a large number of them. After the "direct" route is created dubbleclick on it and change the profile to "Motorcycle", or any other. The route will be recalculated with the chosen profile and will now be as any other route. The route you end up with may not be exactly as the track due to the reduction of "points" but this is easily fixed with the tools in Basecamp. This works in Basecamp version 4.7.1. And I have also used this method in earlier versions. I hope this make sense as English is not my first language.

Garmin change the behaviour of this (I think … 😁) with the newest of there Motor Navigation tools the Zumo XT. And now you can go of the track, and it wil not recalculate. I use this when I’m frist doing some Higway before I reach my entry point of the route. In the mean time you wil see a dashed line pointing to the entry point of the Route.

I've watched many a video on how to achieve this, most of which bamboozled me but this one worked 1st time and is so easy to follow. It also included the best tip on what to do about recalculating the route - which explains why a recent trip back from Switzerland didn't go entirely according to plan - I thought it rerouted onto the originally planned route and not just the quickest/shortest. Brilliant work Greg, no idea how I missed this last year - will subscribe and like and if I'm ever in your neck of the woods in the States I'll buy you a pint

My brother and I have sorted this out recently, many thanks to your video explanation Greg. I've been planning 'roads less traveled' rides occassionly for the past 20+ years. My brother and I enjoy doing them, as it allows for a more enjoyable relaxed ride/pace. In the past I used to use 2 or 3 paper maps of the surrounding road networks of our hometown, in as to plan a ride within a 100 mile (160km) radius. Once a ride was plotted, I'd pre-ride it alone to ensure it flowed without too many dead ends/turn arounds. Didn't take long for me to begin having a strong dislike to planning rides, much to my brother's disappointment. Now with Google maps resources I no longer as much, frown on planning rides. As the Google/Garmin nexus is complimentary to each other, the temperamental beast that is BaseCamp, no longer has me totally frustrated. Having used Garmin GPS devices for the past 20 years for rides, and watching the development of digital mapping to the present day. It can only be a bonus, from here on. A 'road less traveled' becomes a road worth anticipating on a journey.

A very well explained tutorial. I've been toiling with route planning using Basecamp every time I go to Europe on the bike . At best it's a very time consuming process that occasionally works as planned, but most times it just doesn't. I'm not particularly interested or competent in the use of computers but your clear steps and explanations have enabled me to use Google Maps like I've always wanted to. My wife and me are leaving for North Western Spain in the coming days and thanks to your video I appear to have managed to create what should be a stunning route from Ojedo to Tudela. Thank you for your help!!😀

Nice video well explain. That’s exactly what I was doing since now! I was using the Garmin navigator lV since 10 years and replace it for the new Garmin XT last week. You can use it the exact same way that you do but everything will be much faster because of the CPU. But one of the very nice new option is that you can use your phone with Google and sent your map to your Garmin XT using Garmin Drive app. So now in real time on the road I can use my phone with Google to create my map and send it to the GPS and it is very fast! Some will say why you don’t use your phone all the time? Well try it and you will understand!!!

firstly, great video, it's thorough and concise, thank you. However, the main thing that strikes me is how many stages one has to go through just to get a decent route on their sat nav! I agree that Google maps has the best mapping and is the easiest to drag and customise your route but all the other steps shouldn't be necessary really, I'm just shocked at how bad the TomTom and Garmin own brand mapping is....I've been looking into Sat Nav's for some time and the TomTom / Garmin / Beeline / iPhone maps all have pros and cons. I just wish the whole "Sat Nav" thing was easier to use! I think Gamin should be ashamed of themselves for making paying customers go through so many steps as should in your video!

thankks so much. I have the same Garmin my kids bought for me in 04?05? Somewhere in there anyway, so it is seriously the worse for wear. Button covers missing that I can’t replace and so on. It helped me on my 03 RoadGlide till I swapped it (along with a bunch of money, of course) for our current TRIGLIDE ULTRA. It still sits on my handle bar and helps me with speed, fuel and so on. The Ultra has the HD nav suites on board along with their ride planner. It’s OK, but no Garmin. Thinking about getting the Zumo XT but don’t know how to move routes from HD to Garmin. Still researching……..

Greg: excellent - I went on a ride in the mountains a week ago with my Zumo XT. I rode about 40 miles on dirt, gravel, and paved roads. After the ride, decided I would like to take all of the unsaved tracks, somehow attach them all together and bring them back into Google Maps to share with a friend. I'm afraid to loose the data in the GPS, have no idea how to do this. I could try saving the individual tracks which I think is a starting point, but don't know where to go next. I have basecamp installed on my computer.
