That’s why you need to carry a gun in the back country. Yes even in Banff National Park.

No gun= not experienced and shouldn't have been in bear country

As someone who works in industrial safety. I can tell you that experience can sometimes be the downfall. Complacency kills or maims more often than people realize. Plus always remember that sometimes there is no "doing everything right" when dealing with large, apex predators. Regardless of human study, they are unpredictable at best.

Many years ago I found myself between a black bear mother and her two cubs who were up a tree. I didn't realize the mother was there until I heard her to my right. It was hunting season so I did have a gun, but I much preferred not to use it. I kept walking and at the same time gently talked to the mother in a normal tone of voice telling her I had no intention of hurting her or her cubs. Obviously, since I'm writing this I escaped harm and the mother allowed me to pass.

Yes, the key to surviving a bear attack is carrying a Smith and Wesson 500 magnum emergency survival kit.

from the mid 80's to the early 2000's I hiked this route at least once per year. If you are not a good outdoorsman you should use extreme caution as shown in this video. If you are not in decent shape please give yourself 10 to 12 hours to complete this hike. Bring a change of socks and make the switch at the summit, your feet will thank you.

What a phenomenal interview having the opportunity to hear that Todd's physical and mental toughness were literally the difference between life and death. Bigtime respect to Todd for having such discipline when death was pushing down his door. Ultimate respect and thanks to Todd for sharing such a personal experience. Thank you very much.

Your adds are increased with a firearm period if you rely upon bear spray to save your life your a liberal it comes down to shot placement weather the bear is changing or not and the reason we people with guns acting like idiots is because of a lack of fathers in the home across the hole us

When I worked at Lake Louise we used to refer to dogs as bear bait. One of the problems being a scared dog will run toward its owners with the bear close behind.

If this is the story I think it is, there is actual audio footage of the attack and I've heard it. It was horrible and I didn't sleep right for like a week. I can't remember what channel I watched the documentary on, but it mentioned that it was near hibernation season, and for some reason they decided to prolong their stay.

They were all in their tent. Reading. I'm not sure how the dog would have had an impact on this tragedy.
@HomeInWildSpaces3 күн бұрын
It’s not totally certain that was the case. Though it is certainly possible. Regardless. We are talking about an underweight bear heading into hibernation. The mere scent of the dog would easily have been enough to draw in a desperate bear. Bears do sometimes prey on both wild and domestic dogs. The fact that the dog was killed also suggests it participated in the event. Again, with all parties now deceased we will never have all the answers. But there are enough clues to inform the conversation about what went wrong and what the rest of us should learn from this tragedy.

Dog and no protection… I don’t care what your feelings on guns are, if you’re going to go play out in places where nature is on full alert, you need a gun, and your dog is likely to be the protagonist for the attack. So do your diligence and protect your family… I’m 6’4 I weigh 255 lbs that’s an appetizer for an irritated grizzly especially a female with a cub near by and a dog challenging the natural order because it’s doing its best to protect its people. You probably cooked dinner, you smell like food etc. this is the outcome when hippies venture into grown people territory

@dentman56795 күн бұрын
So here’s my 2 cents Born and raised in the Rocky Mountains and I got bear hunting fairly often bear spray is ok at best weather permitting and untrained people with a handguns are even worse on average 1 shot won’t be enough to put it down or stop it (yes even from a 44 mag) so expect to need multiple shots hence why 10mm is becoming so popular for black bear protection so moral of the story practice with what you carry and hope to never need it and remember the fbi says 21 feet is the minimum distance to draw and effectively shoot a human attacker now think of what that distance would be for a bear who can run at over 30mph

I thought one thing everyone learned from Rogan was to just shut up and let the guest talk. Too much interaction with the guest and saying "yeah" every 10 seconds ruins the interview. Let the man talk!
