I apologise for the delay. Because the quartz tube that contains the arc runs at least red hot once the plasma has got up to full working pressure and temperature. It then has to cool down, which takes a few seconds to get to a temperature where it is not emitting visible light.

Slit and razor should be aligned in such a way that they should be parallel to each other. || So that when sharp beam of monochromatic light comes through the slit gets diffracted from sharp edge of razor and simultaneously we will observe the diffraction pattern through eye piece.
