I know what you mean about taking too much gear. I usually enter by the quietest gate, not the one at the main entrance (shop, cafe), it’s always crowded. Just take some pencils or ink.

This was my first visit and although I entered from the lion gate (not the main one) it was just before school holidays and I think it was a day when school visit the gardens. Very busy! It was lovely and luckily I purchased their membership so I can come back again soon better prepared! Good tip for bringing just pencils and ink pen. I love my gouache but for quick sketches you’ve made a better choice! Next time! ☺️
