Has it affected job searching and getting hired? I got the same thing happening right now.
@ianonaquest21 күн бұрын
@Jamel5552 During that time, it did not. I remember being told in trucking school that the average trucker, during their first year, goes through 3 companies. Not sure what that number looks like now though.

I got lucky because my trainer was one of my close friends! I move people from state to state and it pays pretty well! Hard work, but solid checks 💯

What did you think it was gonna be like? Didn't you realize you wouldn't be home every night ?
@thomaskirkpatrick4031Ай бұрын
Yes I'm alone, but I'm never lonely. It's possible you aren't right for trucking. But it's also possible that a better trainer might change your mind. I think you should give it a second chance.
@thomaskirkpatrick4031Ай бұрын
I wish you would give it another chance. Talk to the company, find yourself a good trainer.

My company has their own driving school. We had a small class, so our instructor was able to waste time and nap in the truck. The first time I ever did a 45 back was in a busy parking lot, and my trainer had no patience. I liked him as a person but I’m glad he isn’t my boss lol I barely passed my driver skills evaluation because he sucked at teaching the 45, but I passed. I was only supposed to be out with the trainer 14 - 21 days, but cause of where his home time was I was gone 45 days sometimes not even getting training pay. They made me do a load on the way home, but my trainer was curtainside, and I’m driving flatbed. I was so lost on how to tarp my first load, and backing up with the touchy throttle truck with over 40,000 pound load on was awful, and I wasn’t even trained properly. Now I know how to 45 back pretty well, but I literally take my shoes off with heavy loads cause of how dumb the throttle is. Once it says clutch overheating it’s over lol I realized now hitting the brakes makes it worse, but my trainer kept yelling don’t stop keep moving, and then I’d accidentally floor it lol but it’s better to ease on to it and not move for a second instead of flooring it and hitting the brakes.

I enjoyed your tale. OTR has sucked forever. Living in a truck with another person is tough. OTR is hellish. Your truck school training and military is nothing like common carrier. You don't understand if the trailer can roll you roll with it pre trip or post trip. Unless you are getting paid by the hour or detention time you roll with what ever trailer you pick up . With electronic logs the driver is even more screwed. I would log off duty and get no pay but I kept my hours when there was a break down (dual paper logs). Yeah a reefer count on that sucker breaking down under a load and could cost you a day or more. OTR driving sucks. As long as the trucker bs makes it look so desirable the new flow of truck driver school recruits is endless but man working 12 hour shift at walmart night stock is much more lucrative.

@speedygemini385 I appreciate that. This was nearly three years ago. I have to drop more updates. I did try a couple other companies and different types of hauling before throwing in the towel altogether. I enjoyed belly dump hauling and if I had to get back in a truck later in life, I'd choose that.

@BigBroDre, Thanks for your service man. I hope you have gotten seen over the years and continue to seek the help you need bro. Joining, staying in, or separating is a preference, in my opinion. I don't feel a person can go wrong with whatever they feel is best for them.

All trucking sucks. Lots of Truck drivers are on camera while driving, sent to places that are almost impossible to back into, lots of 12-14 hour days, road pirates like DOT and State troopers always looking to pick your pockets, companies with extremely complicated pay rates ( to screw u outta money ) , shit roads, 4 wheelers that shouldn't be allowed to operate a bicycle never mind an automobile, etc , etc..
@ianonaquestАй бұрын
@rickbergstrom3859, in my opinion, trucking is for people who enjoy it. From experience, I can agree with some of the cons you listed.

how would one read optimally?
@ianonaquest4 ай бұрын
@TheEncouragementKid I would recommend reading often and trying different strategies so that you can adopt a practice that is most effective for you. This may be reading out loud, reading in silence, going to a library, reading slow, reading fast, or skimming etc. If I may add, don’t feel mentally challenged if you have to read a passage several times before you grasp an understanding of it. This was actually recommended in an ethics and moral reasoning class I took last year. Good luck!

Save your money, DONT take a combat MOS, Use it as a stepping stone in life but dont get emotionally stuck there because most of your life WILL be spent in the civilian life. It helps if you have a strong family supporting you when you get out. DONT mess up your ties with family... you will need them again. It sucks but if you can crash at mom and dads again until you get on your feet... it helps. I never understood these guys who never went home and decided to drink and fuck hookers instead on leave. They are the ones who at 50 years of age are drunk in a bar, have nothing, and can only reminisce about there times as a Marine...... F that!!!!!
