i've seen solution solved with adding more topology to joints at right locations but never seen solution solved with adding bones.. seams people just need to think outside of the box hope to see more tutorials related to solving issue with bones

if i had to guess at why this works so well i'd imagine it's because it's replicating the dynamics of actual muscle better? i wonder if there could be some more generalized nugget of information somewhere in here that could be applied to every joint

I think the crotch bone should stay static parented to hip bone, and not displace between legs, for a more realistic rig.

Im impressed by people able to paint background plate like that, using 2D element even real footage and HDRI for the Sky in 3D compositing is always the key to control highly detail scene, since we have PBR texture with normal map and roughness we can light 2.5D element, it's a good way to not over complicate layout , in stereoscopie it's a bit more tricky to sell flat element but thanks to normal map and depht map it's not impossible. If the object are far away and not in close-up shot.

Is there a way to add this to the existing rig without messing up the current weight paint? Like I've already weight painted the upper body in a specific way and I just want to apply this to the hip part. But after parenting the mesh to updated rig with automatic weights, it screws up the upper body weight paint.
