I think my favorite Follin brothers track is The Fleapit from Plok. It starts with a spoof of A Link To The Pasts dark world dungeon theme, and then changes vibes and genres like 3 times

They did work on a Solstice 2! It's called Equinox, for the SNES, but it's ambient music unlike its predecessor

Does anyone else find it weird that plok is in a red hood where he wants to 'exterminate the fleas from cotton island'. in which he crosses the sea to go to 'akrillic' with tanks and helicopters and as a cowboy or an old british hunter guy. and like... the title screen. Or the "shooting flea" on the fleas wiki page. Like that's a lot of coincidences

I think the ultimate bow to the brothers talents are the mistakes in this video. The ZX spectrum didnt have 3 channels. It had 1. Tim programmed his own music routine (at 16 years old mind you) that was able to interlace several channels in software, and then output it to the 1-bit beeper. This is why it sounds as tim himself put it "nails in a vacuum". Since any other waveform would be unnecessarily taxing on the cpu. But also, the brothers nes games didnt use samples, they used a rare technique of combining the triangle and noise channel to create the drums, which not only sounds great due to their clarity compared to the sample channel but also acts as a natural sidechain on the bass since only one sound can be played per channel at once. This made them clearer and louder than they would have been had they simply been stacked with the sample channel like most games did. They never cease to amaze.

I think I can hear a little K-pop aesthetic in the Turning Red tune.

9:51 Undertale Core type beat, this legitimately sounds like a Toby Fox song
I'm 100% certain I've heard that beach theme somewhere else before and I'm trying to figure it out. I can't imagine it was popular enough to just find in random videos or anything. May be possible it's been sampled?

Yeah, that "Stevie Wonder" part is basically just bar-for-bar Do I Do by Stevie Wonder. Not complaining -- these guys had the genius in the NINETIES to take musical inspiration from Stevie Wonder of all people. Composers like me can only hope to be even half as good.

Those NES tracks sound like modern chiptune and yet they were made with extremely limited audio channels, that's absolutely nutty. Like that Silver Surfer track sounds right out of the Just Shapes & Beats soundtrack but it was made in the 90s.

The thing about Beach that screwed me up so bad was the rhythm. When I was trying to arrange it for piano and got to the 4/4 part, I had assumed the first Gmaj7 chord was beat 1 and continued with that until measure 63 when I found out there was an extra sixteenth note. I could not wrap my mind around what had happened before realizing that the first chord happens before the 4/4 and I'd have to rewrite the entire section 😭

23:04 My first detailed composition uses this chord progression (albeit a simpler version, just the default versions of the chords)! This video was a major reason to do so, its such a beautiful progression and this helped me understand it!

Euro game developers love their arpeggios to the point where it feels overdone, but the Follin brothers really understood how to get the most out of the 8-bit warble. Every single piece by them sounds fantastic.

In the same way that the recent Ducktales reboot cartoon showed respect to the Moon theme from the NES game, I will know that a Silver Surfer adaptation gave a crap if they incorporate some of the music from that NES game.

*Three* channels on the 48k Spectrum? No. ONE beep channel. And while sound while playing, everything else had to stop. Tim was able to squeeze FIVE music channels AND percussion out of that beeper when he did the intro music for Chronos. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r7CpZ5h-rdi0mpc.html
