one of the biggest advantages of this car is that it is the first to have one pedal drive. Because even Tesla with its model S did not have that. just a hold hill. and the e up only has one pedal in forward gear, but in reverse a creep.

After four years of driving i3S's (a 2018 S -Rex and now a 2022 120ah) I agree totally with your thoughts. I am coming to the end of my agreement and I'm going to refinance the remainder rather than hand it backas I can't even think about giving it back yet.. I've seen some newer cars but nothing ticks all the boxes like the little i3 Which is pretty amazing since even the latest iteration is OLD now by EV terms. All these young whippersnappers still had some catching up to do and they're only just getting there now - but none offer quite the unique "concept" experience like the i3.. and especially not for the kind of money you can get an i3 for now. If it suits your needs (and it won't suit all) it's a superb car. I feel priviledged to have owned not one but two.

Hi Tom, greetings from Finland! I've driven my 2014 BMW i3 60 Ah for over 8 years and almost 100 000 kms. The car is a masterpiece in engineering, I like that there is not much to rust as panels are mostly plastic. The light interior is still very futuristic. The biggest downside in my opinion is the suspension. With bad roads it is harsh and shaky on 19 inch wheels.

Now i rarely use the scooter engine in the boot . I agree about the dire lack of tyre choices available ,i wish at least they would have an all season tyre option as trying to find chains or socks to fit these wheel sizes is impossible, very niche me thinks .

Hi Tom, greetings from the U.K. I bought a new i3 in 2019, still have it, still love it. Now at 43k miles. My only niggle is the ride quality, which is quite harsh for my taste. My only expense has been 4 new tyres at 37k miles - I chose Continentals over the factory fit Bridgestones, imho the Continentals are a big improvement in terms of noise and comfort, and come with more tread depth than the Bridgestones. Shout out to Wisely Automotive for there excellent videos for i3 owners.

Trickle down economy is the mid to longterm solution . Im from Bulgaria living in Germany for 8 years now. The cars i drive now are 2019 and 2023 built respectively. This is normal here. When i land for my vacation in Bulgaria i see cars built 2004-2012 on the streets with milage 80k km considered as low. Infrastructure is also very importaint. Lot of people living in such coutries do so in appartmentblocks, so home charging would be very awkward or impossible, even if they could afford an EV. If we move mentally 20 years in the future, supposing that most car manufacturers sto making ICE vehicles, the consumers in 2nd and 3rd world countries would have little choice but to by hybrids or EVs from the west/far east. That would build up the economic pressure to build up the infrastructure. There are other considerations besides enviroment, that should be taken into accout. Energy indipendence being one of the big ones. Advanced human like robots are looming over the horizon as well. Powering them with small battery packs is also a product of economies of scale and trickle down economics (breaking big used EV batteries for the robots/home battery packs).

Very good points. Here in The Netherlands some cities can't cope with the power demands during rush hour and people are being advised not to plug in. So it can only work if the governments also do their part in upgrading the grids.
@michaellowe36652 ай бұрын
Taxing everything higher is a dumb idea. Governments dont do anything worthwhile with the additional money they get. They hand it out to connected friends and start wars with each other. One thing is certain, if you tax and subsidize different technologies based on your feelings, you will never know which one is actually cleaner. If you take away taxes and subsidies on all forms of energy and transportation, they will compete on price alone. Price is a product of the materials and labor needed to make something. Whatever requires less input will be the lower cost and will be used more.

Problem is - most of "produce transport": Ships, big hauling trucks and planes - will be 90+ % of all CO emissions - so even if all small private family cars would be tomorrow electric - that will change max about 10%( at best ) of CO pollution. So all that fuzz about - change your car and save the planet is total bs. And that is so even if you will forget about all those new dig sites all over the world that are needed to keep that EV wet dream alive - just think what kind of machinery is used to dig up/ transport all over the world, all those metals used on EV's batteries that will emit so much toxic waste if they would burn...So yeah. It is nice to blame your average Joe meanwhile all big companies are still polluting away like crazy. Sure it nice to blame China, but we all forget, all that massive pollution in China is only because we all want our stuff cheaply produced there. If tomorrow China would produce only stuff for them selves - those numbers would go down big time. So we should be honest with ourselves, those few EV big trucks in Netherlands will not cover Netherlands own needs for stuff - not even close.

Has anyone done a cost or emissions analysist on this? What I mean by this is is the emissions actually lower when most electricity is generated by burning fossil fuels and on top of that, there's an energy loss in transmission? Cost wise, I already know it's not cheaper because there's an artificial inflation on gas and diesel. As high as the fuel tax is here in the States, it's getting to a point where many places, charging an EV is starting to cost more per mile. And at this point, we aren't even charged road tax on electric as we are on fuels. Then there's the worse miles per charge and longer charging times in the colder months. With the little knowledge I currently have on this, I feel hybrids are our best best. I have this gut feeling EVs are only a stop gap till we move to something else like hydrogen or synthetic fuels. Heck, Chevron just released a new gas that reduces CO2 by 40%. If the priority is to reduce CO2, then a synthetic fuel like Chevron's will have the largest and quickest impact since there are so many petrol fueled vehicles on the road.
@super69ev2 ай бұрын
EV's are way more efficient than petrol powered cars. Because of that fact alone they pollute less, even if you charge them with coal electric.
@crabjoe2 ай бұрын
@@super69ev Are you sure? Because EIA says it takes 1.14 pound of coal to generate 1kWh of electricity. EPA says burning a pound of coal emits 2.07 pounds of CO2 and 1 gallon of gas burned emits 19.42 pounds of CO2. My buddy's Rav4 XSE Hybrid has been getting around 42mpg a gallon. So lets say for 19.42 pounds CO2, he's getting 42 miles. The RAV4 Prime has an 18.1kWh batter pack, in pure EV more, Toyota says it can travel 42 miles.. How nice.. the miles match .. Taking 18 kWh x 1.14 pounds of coal means it needs 20.6 lbs of coal. 20.6 lbs of Coal times 2.07lb = 42.7 pounds of CO2 emissions in EV only mode. For the same mileage, the hybrid only used 1 gallon of gas which is 19.42 pounds of CO2 emitted. Looks like just using gas in a Hybris is less polluting than a pure EV to me.

Very healthy opinion. Of course it's not only the Netherlands, the exact same discussion happens in Germany and France and I hope in at least half of Europe... But I'd love public discussion to sound more like this. EVs are great for cities and people who drive a lot. But I do not see us being 100% EV by 2035. I am not even sure it's worth aiming for that target, considering the political damage it causes. The issue with climate politics is that all practical solutions we currently follow are shit. We are still trying to solve the issue by "convincing" the average person to become a bit more economical. For people with money that may even provide some positive emotion, because yeah, you're doing your part with your brand new EV, and it's okay when good food is more expensive because it's more sustainable. But it divides people into an "at least we're doing something" and a "it's not worth ruining ourselves for" group, and it's really frustrating. We really should focus more on infrastructure topics, like how we do energy, industry and agriculture - unfortunately out of all groups, it's the Green party here in Germany and activist groups like Greenpeace, who don't like research on modern cultivation methods, chemical crop protection, genetic engineering and nuclear energy. Even though wind and solar are doing great, there is just no reason other than fear to have one single coal plant on the net today, and really for the past 15 years. But it's cars we need to focus on, right?
@super69ev2 ай бұрын

In my country the single biggest emitter is transport, primarily made up of privately owned cars. They make up about 30% of total emissions. EVs can easily halve those emissions. Meaning 15% of our total emissions can be cut. That's not a small amount. Every country individually can say "well there is no point, there are too many other countries" but that way we all fail. Each country can individually make a huge difference - note that all the highest polluting countries are also the countries with the ability to do the change. So obsessing about how underdeveloped coutnries would do it is missing the point that those countries are not the ones that really need to. Countries like China are doing it - massively faster than the UK (don't know NL stats) so why should we just not bother despite everything going for us? TLDR: The point is we all have to. And yes, EVs are much cleaner. We also have to do a lot of other things - in my country the big ones that need addressed would be domestic heating (both insulation and heat source) and reducing impacts of farming/food choices, while transport will need to drop more than the switch to EVs alone will achieve (so more public transport, more micro-mobility etc). PS yes, tax flying higher. It's ridiculous it isn't taxed more.

Most people don't realize that jet fuel has lead in it, unlike petrol for cars which is unleaded. Every time a jet engine is used, it's slowly poisoning us with lead in the air. I honestly believe that EV's are polluting more than ICE vehicles because of not only of charging via power grids that use coal and gas, but more importantly, the vast majority of lithium for the batteries comes from China. They destroy the land and the planet by doing open excavation and they NEVER refill it or do anything to help restore the pits. They use mostly, if not exclusively, coal power to power everything. They pollute more from coal plants than ALL the other countries combined... (twice over I believe but I could be wrong about that). They made a promise to reduce the amount of coal plants and made a pledge to go green. However, they lied, as the CCP always does. They make promises that they never plan on keeping. I mean look at Hong Kong and how that went. They are constantly building NEW and MORE coal plants. It just gets worse from there. So how again are electric vehicles green and better for the environment? The cost of making and operating electric vehicles is equal (if not probably more) than ICE vehicles. Anyway, that's my rant. :)
