Please keep this channel going. I love that your suggestions are much more helpful than a lot of other primary texts which might not give the complete context hat could hinder understanding and appreciation of the text. Thank you and what youre doing is wonderful. I rarely comment but i just have to!

Are these rules can be applied both to non-fiction and fiction books, correct? Or mostly for non-fiction?

It is nice to understand how Oscar worked in his journals, however I don't believe we should add rules to our own journals/commonplace book. Some of these sound like tasks they make you do at school that feel laborious and so we lose the joy of writing for ourselves.

So very true. I hate to equate a "library" to the internet...but having a mass of information at your fingertips is so vital to a mind. I personally don't like the internet. You're grasping at other peoples concepts of what is important. A book is more likely to be a primary source than an entry on a "web." And I truly feel that you engage a different part of your brain when you read a book than you do when you scan a computer entry. I have unread books...but I know I have them. And when I open them it's like entering a new room in a solid house. A book on my shelves can't be edited by an outside source. It can't be deleted or erased by someone far away. Of course you have to protect your volumes. Thank Heaven thousand upon thousands of our ancestors felt the same and left the distilled knowledge for us to access, digest and discuss. And books don't need batteries.

I want to read multiple religious books at once, like the Quran and the Bible. Or multiple Bibles at the same time. I may take the step to read more than 1 at a time

Isn't this just a journal with some quotes and things from other people? As soon as you start writing any comments in perhaps to discuss what the quote meant to you, for example, you're journaling.

Your video is such a breath of fresh air! I always kept personal journals and notebooks for specific interests but now I am going to attempt to keep a Commonplace Notebook - being a writer and avid reader myself. I also love Oscar Wilde so this video grabbed my attention from start to finish - thank you for your research and sharing this!

I totally agree with you on contemporary, modern art, I feel the same. And I love what you said: "self-expression is not necessarily art"! This sentence struck me, it hits the nail on the head! I personally think and feel that for something to be truly beautiful, it has to remind us of the good. If it brings us down, it's not beauty

thanks for mentioning that moleskin downgraded their paper, I loooved their pocket notebooks, every year for the past 5 years I got 2, and the last time I was so disappointed and sad, cause theire quite expensive and the only reason i got them was because of the paper. I can no longer use fountain pens cause it hurts my soul the amount of bleeding that occurs.

Of course Eco never read 30,000 books. At one book a day it would take 82 years to read that many but still he was very erudite. Read his essay on Time. He outlined his demands on time from both himself and other people who tasked him with even more deeds

I stumbled on Nietzsche in the public library when I was a teenager and after starting and giving up on "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" I tried "Beyond Good and Evil" By that time I was having a gap year between school and college and was working in a firework factory and I read "Beyond Good and Evil" in the Kaufmann translation in the works canteen and I was asked about it a lot by the folks I sat with (none of whom probably did school after 15 / 16 years old so it was interesting to try to explain it to folks with no background in philosophy) I actually enjoyed Ecce Homo but then I realised he was a big joker / witty writer.

Also worth mentioning is Samuel Johnson's opinion the advice that books, once started, should be read all the way through: "This is surely a strange advice; you may as well resolve that whatever men you happen to get acquainted with, you are to keep them for life. A book may be good for nothing; or there may be only one thing in it worth knowing; are we to read it all through?" (Quoted in Boswell's Life of Johnson.)

I've discovered "how to use" my brain, as when my wife dies, I had to take really care of myself, my kids relying on my physical/psychological wellbeing. So, at first decided to lose weight, taking care about what I was eating, then (re)-starting to read, to learn. Then discovered... journaling. Have now started 4 years ago to write down almost everything I can remember, want to remember/write, before going to bed, always at minimum 15 mns. I repeat a lot of things about my everyday life, this is how we also work… we're "animals" of habits. I've started a personalized learning plan, in which I'm counting the amount of time I'm spending per activity. Learning languages, reading, mind games, etc... this is how I, now, keep a track on myself. The only objective is to keep myself aligned on the matter/activity I've decided to go through. And journaling is a part of it, the "last" part of the day is dedicated to it. Always with pens, fountain pens (I like to change the "tool" I'm using to write, everyday I'm changing of pen), I've also started to learn to use a feather (which is quite different). I know that my kids had seen me writes, as I'm not closing the door of my room, and frankly, I don't really care if someone reads it. This is me, they know me. Nothing to hide from my kids. What I don't want to share, I'll keep it in my mind. Thank you to share with all this way of dealing with ourselves, there's always a way, and this is the way you're choosing for yourself. You can take example on "how to" do things, still you have to adapt it to your way of living/doing.

Setting is a perfect 'Darling Buds of May' I recommended the Soul's Code with respect to your recommendation of the book on genius. Mozart was in full contact with the divine as far as I can see for his Requiem Mass ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL from beginning to end. What is beauty? I too am not a fan of modern art. Beauty is truth and Truth is beauty according to the quote. I agree with this, beauty answers a question that we didn't know we were asking.
