Another great exercise is to do the same thing with scales. Start with C as the tonic note, then the 2nd, then the 3rd etc. When you get to doing it as ALL 12, then you're into the altered scales, etc. (e.g. C as the b9 or #5 of the scale).
@gregfishmanjazzstudiosАй бұрын
Yes. I do the same with all scales and modes.

This is a great exercise, Greg. It will be a great workout for me, and enough work for a long time. I have just realized that I can usually hear and sing most intervals going up... for this exercise you need to sing the intervals going down. OMG!

Jou Play Bb Not c, just saying.
@gregfishmanjazzstudios2 ай бұрын
The tenor saxophone is a transposing instrument. I play my C, which is a concert Bb. I say the note name of the instrument, so people watching, playing the same instrument, know the fingerings. Some beginning sax players can’t transpose from concert key. This is why I say the note in the sax key. Hope that you enjoyed the video lesson.

@@gregfishmanjazzstudios Well, i liked the idea, but i do ,obviously, not play sax. It was helpful for me anyways, so thank you.

My last saxophone teacher was Peter King (in UK) Peter said that he only ever used the bis Bb. At all times. And he was a master - esp of hard bop / bebop
@stewartwforbes4 ай бұрын
Such great common sense. I use them all (the Bb’s) including 1+1 and +2 and yep even the +3 (think Eb minor arpeggio). The bus key in a G blues eg is indispensable, but even in any flat KS keep the bus down at all opportune times ! Thnks so much for this important clip on Bis Bb

Beginner question here: Why isn't the flat 9th and sharp 9th called the flat 2nd and sharp 2nd? Same with the F being the 11th instead of 4th etc. Thank you.
@501stComandos4 ай бұрын
If you stack thirds from the root of a 7th chord this is the sequence: 1,3,5,7,9,11,13. The notes above the 7th are called “extensions”. When you notate a 9th,11th, or 13th chord you are indicating you want to include that specific extension, or altered extension (b9, #11, b13, etc.) as well as the Root, 3rd, 5th, and 7th of the chord. A C13 sounds very different than a C6. I find using the piano to study harmony and hearing the subtle deferences is very useful

This was an outstanding practice tip. I like how one can 'level it up' by trying the top-down option, or mixing weird pairings of scales. I feel like I should practice this for the next month straight. Thank you!

Thanks Greg, another excellent video. I've been working on your idea of playing the intervals of a scale and returning to the root note. It's really improved my intonation and my general facility playing a straight step wise scale. Love the sound of the descending maj 7 chord followed by the upward leap. Thanks again.
