I also loved to upgrade old machines, some years ago I ordered a used CPU from China and also used a Nvidia 750ti I had laying around in an old office machine.
@ex-itguy2 күн бұрын
How did that Chinese cpu work out? Sounds interesting!
@PsychoMonk20042 күн бұрын
@@ex-itguy Was some years ago, can't remember it well. I think it was a Core 2 Quad. Looked in the PC manual before, what max cpu I could take! Ordered via Ebay. It arrived maybe 1 1/2 weeks later. And worked straight away! Never had a problem with it, and with the GPU it was enough to run Counterstrike well! But I gifted the PC to a friend. But it was the reason I got into PC gaming again, this little upgrade project I made. I now own a prebuild and am happy with it ;)
@ex-itguy2 күн бұрын
Ah so it was a proper Intel cpu. It can be hit or miss with stuff from China haha. Nothing wrong with prebuilds. If it's good it's good. ;)
@PsychoMonk20042 күн бұрын
@@ex-itguy It was about energy consumption, I build a system myself but it consumed 130w in idle (whole system with monitor etc). And everything was configured the best I could do. I then sold it and bought a prebuild, now 80w in idle (whole system again). I don't know if its something with efficiency and self builds. The components where all very good. Sure, it also had a liquid cooler etc. But the prebuild got about the same power as my self build back then. And consumes way less.
@ex-itguyКүн бұрын
That's quite the difference indeed! Hard to find which components cause that without having others to try. The GTX670 that I show shortly in this video performs about the same as the GTX1050Ti... but uses about twice as much power, both idle and under load. Btw if you like low power devices, you might like the unit in the video I'm working on now. ;)

I'm surprised the power draw isn't actually that bad. I still wouldn't use it as a server though, running that 57 watts continously would cost €150 per year.
@ex-itguy6 күн бұрын
If you keep the onboard video it's just over 30 watts, which isn't that bad. Not the best but surely more powerful than mini systems of the same age if needed.
@ARCx95 күн бұрын
Back then CPUs were between 50 and 100W. Even the high end ones. AMD of that time was notorious for excessive power draw and high cooling requirements, but even AMD had a decent idle power draw.

Found this randomly from the youtube recommendations. I remember years ago installing linux on a Mac Mini 1,1 that had a 32-bit intel cpu, it has the same 32-bit EFI problem it seems as the early 64-bit machines. I even remember running the same patch to remove the EFI loader from the ISO. Excellent video, subscribed :)

We are in a world where old computers are bad to run modern software but Linux still works on a old Mac like this one. I'm still using a +14 year old laptop with 3GB RAM. I used an SSD and installed an extreme lightweight version of Windows and it works so well. +1 sub from me.

I totally agree. Yes newer computers are faster. Nope, you don't "need" them if you're not running demanding tasks. :) I bought a new MacBook last year because video editing became sluggish on my 2015 one. For other things I still use the old one almost daily. :)
