The average Apple fan is yelling for nothing. I don't wanna waste on a product that doesn't do heavy tasks for engineers. Not having hardware acceleration is a huge NO for 99% of the engineers. Maybe some street editors need such expensive trash. Heard that m4 has only 38 tops of AI performance whereas my 4090 has over 1900 tops AI hardware acceleration with ML and DL.

Thanks for this, appreciate the content 👍🏾 I think Apple has had decent NPU’s / AI for some time and was maybe even ahead but they underestimated the need for Chat GPT style use cases and what Microsoft is going all in on. Must admit some of it seems invasive so if I get a new windows machine I will certainly turn off some features. Probably a challenge for Apple is how to package into software - who knows though people may also become bored of the direction Microsoft is going in. I’m just happy there’s a competitive ARMs race at the moment with chips. Let’s see if Apple now makes 16GB RAM a base for Macs

The problem with ChatGPT et al is privacy and copyright. E.g. using a coding assistant puts you into the risk of using copyrighted code where you do not have a license for. That alone makes it unacceptable for professional use, no company will take the risk. Then you transfer all your code to the bot server contributing to training material for the next version. This will put others in the risk of using your copyrighted code. And MS Recall is a privacy nightmare even without transferring data to any server - to use it at your workplace would be illegal as it could be used by your employer to spy on you, which isn't allowed to that extent (monitoring every 5 seconds) at least here in Europe. MS Recall can be disabled by group policy for a reason: no company lawyer worth his or her money would not advise you to do just that.

Will x86-based Applications run efficiently on SnapDragon SoCs ?? If there are early issues with the X86 to ARM "translation" layer, adoption may be slowed and may give the "new" chipset a black eye....regardless of the actual performance.
@olafschluter706
@olafschluter706 3 күн бұрын
This is up to debate. I made measurements on x86_64 emulation on Windows on ARM using a Parallels VM on a mac mini M1 and found, that the x86_64 emulation of W11 on ARM is significantly slower than possible. Whereas Rosetta 2 (the x86_64 emulation on macOS for Apple Silicon computers) gives you almost identical performance of the same algorithm (written in Rust) compiled to either Arm or x86_64, the same is not true for Windows on ARM, where the x86_64 code achieves only half the speed of the arm code. Now this was a synthetical benchmark aiming at just measuring the emulation - same arm and x86_64 code for the benchmarked function on both macOS and Windows without any I/O and operating system calls. With real applications, experience may or may not be that bad. But I would expect that x86_64 versions of video or sound processing software with their bunch of algorithmic data conversion functionality will suffer a lot when not run natively, but emulated on Windows on ARM. Now the Snapdragon Elite X is at least on par with Apple Silicon in performance and performance/watt. So, if the native software is there you want to use, those would be great Windows machines. Long battery life with uncrippled desktop-like performance when not plugged in. What is the most important feature of Macbooks.

The early reports said that Microsoft’s translation layer is faster than Rosetta 2, but it remains to be seen in the real world.

Microsoft Surface devices have been out for four days and we still don't have any third-party benchmarks. In the meantime, I have seen reports on M4 iPads and the chips are impressive. On an iPad. So Microsoft has copied what Apple did in 2020. BTW, I do run Windows 11 ARM on my MacBook Pro and Mac Studio and I just hate the UI. I much prefer W10 as do most people I know. W11 tried to combine W10 elements with some stuff from macOS and it's a mish-mash.

@@iCaveDave think the point is “the internet” is not synonymous with “the World Wide Web”. The internet has been around since early DARPA days, the WWW was invented (as you point out) on NextStep.
@olafschluter706
@olafschluter706 4 күн бұрын
The internet is much older than the web. The Web was invented by Berners-Lee when working at CERN on a Next computer in 1992 IIRC. He designed the http protocol and the first version of HTML and the first web browsers were written at CERN. It was used to share knowledge among scientists. And inspiration of the concept (the linking of documents) was driven by Hypercard - an Apple product for the Macintosh. At that time, MS did not even really know what the internet was. All they had was a TCP/IP-stack for WfW and a Telnet application. Actually MS was the last to join the Web game with W95 and the Internet Explorer. Even AOL has more merits in bringing the internet and the web to the people than MS has.

@@olafschluter706 Research institutions, large tech companies, probably some defense companies use it for email, bulletin board, file transmission back then. We had our own internal network which was worldwide and a few gateways to the outside world or internet. It would be considered quite crude by today's standards but it was a huge competitive advantage over competitors that didn't have the infrastructure. Back in those days, we sent out magtapes for software distribution.

@iCaveDave
@iCaveDave 5 күн бұрын
It’s a tricky conversation, because for example, I would never have the budget to get custom music composed, recorded by an orchestra and used in a video, but if AI means I can get closer to that kind of thing, knowing it would never be as good as the real thing, is that OK? Ai generated visuals in general will never look as good as filmed work with real actors, but if independents can tell a story with it, where should the line be drawn? It’s such a grey area and I don’t have a good answer.
@BradWendesPod
@BradWendesPod 5 күн бұрын
@@iCaveDave absolutely agree! For simple graphics and some sound design I will use AI. Those tasks would traditionally be the domain of small creators, who I couldn’t justify paying for. On the other hand, massive corporations using AI instead of paying professional human creatives seems unethical and wrong. It’s a really interesting grey area, and I’m interested to see how it evolves. Sadly I assume it will result in corporations saving money and producing lower quality content - at least in the short term.

In our company we are not allowed to make use of any ML assistant. Mostly copyright concerns: using ML-based code completions may infringe copyright of others and and letting ML-bots analyse our code may lead to others using our copyrighted and sometimes even confidential code (we are in the IT security business), and here confidential means confidential by law (i.e. classified). The concept of MS recall violates the GDPR among other laws. It's wise of MS to allow admins to disable it by group policy. As that what would happen once this gets rolled out into enterprises by a W11 update.
