Im South African and Im waiting on my Skilled Visa in a few weeks then moving across to Dublin to join a large construction company. Family will be joining me in about 6 months and we cant wait for the new Life and beginnings. I will be joining other South Africans in this major construction company also, so will see some familiar faces also. Im sure we might cross paths in the same industry.

when you get your Irish license, do they cancel your original license or do you get it back?

You hand in your SA license and they swap it out for the Irish license so you cannot have both unfortunately.

9:44 Safety is always a subjective one but compared to SA, the nature and severity of crime is on a different scale. My father-in-law from South Africa could not get over the hustle and bustle of Grafton Street and the opportunity for him to grab a coffee in Butlers chocolates and wander the streets of Dublin and pop into any of the free museums. It made him feel 50 years younger.

No 1 reason people choose to move or stay in Ireland is job opportunities. If you can live outside of Dublin you will be better off. Thanks to Ryanair (an Irish airline), whatever you may think of them, it makes seeing Europe very cheap.

when buying my 1st house my solicitor gave me some good advice, try work as much as possible with the builder and keep the solicitors out of it. I did and it worked out well. I did the same for our 2nd house. For that one the builder gave me the keys (so I could do some work in the house ~ floor the attic) in Nov'03 when I only had the deposit paid (10%). While solicitors were over and back, we moved in Feb'04 and didn't pay the balance til Jul'04. Build a relationship with your builder, build thrust, have a little give and take. Don't approach them with suspicion as if they are going to screw you. Don't bust their chops unnecessarily
