I know their scientific name, Nycticorax, means "night raven." But, this particular bird sounds more like a small dog than a raven. 😞

We had 4 this year every time one would come to the feeder another one would chase it off all four would be darting back and forth ours didn't show up until the middle of June we put the feeders out every year

I've spent my whole life watching animal documentaries and never heard of this bird. Tonight I heard it and had to Google it. I thought it sounded like a heron but at night? Circling overhead? I was surprised. How cool!

Research shows that dinosaurs did NOT roar or make complex song calls. They sounded rather more like this as they were essentially prehistoric birds. Songbirds nowadays are pretty recently evolved things after dinosaurs went extinct.
