Loving your videos. Really good info. Keep up the good work. Was surprised to hear you refer to the JetSki Bible... the Author, David Simon built my race boats back in the day. He was my mechanic on tour from 92-95. Still have one of them.

Jim is there a fuel pump in a 1991 yahama wave runner?
@jetskijim007
@jetskijim007 Күн бұрын
The fuel pump is on the back of the carburetor, there is a hose that is the same material as fuel line that sends pulses from the crank going up and down from the engine case to the carb. That is the fuel pump. It is mechanical, not electric.

Jim, thank you it took me a while to figure out Gary Hart. I’m 62 now got introduced to Gary from John Who owned Temple city Kawasaki at the time Gary was one of my first sponsors. He hooked me up with all the gear nose, and , side, braces. mats chin pad plus all the T-shirts and shit I could ever wear. He was a great guy and will be missed definitely I’m sure he’s helped out way more riders than me used to let us come in and use the shop to tear our boat apart. Thank you Jim thank you.

Jim, this hit me hard Gary Hart was one of my first sponsors when I was racing jet skis. He hooked me up with mats side, braces nose, brace 440 superstock and my 550 mod anytime I needed JetSki stuff. He was always there to help me out it took me a while to figure out because I’m 60+ now, but he was a great guy, he would let us come use his shop Godspeed Gary on your next adventure

You don't need a second set of hands to hold the key in the start position when you're using a jumper wire to engage the starter. Just turn the key to on/run position and use the jumper wire to engage the starter

Does the check valve let air into the fuel tank, or do you use it to let excess pressure out? I have mine letting air in and noticed when it got hot sitting on trailer some fuel leaked into the engine compartment.
@jetskijim007
@jetskijim007 2 күн бұрын
Correct, on the oem check valves they will pop off and release pressure to keep it from building pressure and damaging the tank. The chinese ebay ones do not, and you need to crack loose the fuel cap when not riding, so as to not overpressure the tank...

Can a person remove the starter on a 1993 650SX without removing the muffler system to get to the bolts and have a passage way to get the starter out of the engine compartment? Is there a trick to do this?
@jetskijim007
@jetskijim007 15 күн бұрын
It can be done, but it is way more difficult than just taking the top 3 bolts out of the exhaust pipe, the one bolt on the side, loosen up one of the large hose clamps on the large coupler, and the back half of the exhaust assembly rotates up and right out or the ski, exposing the starter.
@claymilner1201

In one of your videos, you say the threads in the exhaust manifolds strip out, that's why I did not want to take the riser off the exhaust manifold. If I do remove the three bolts and remove the riser, is the gasket (11009-3752) re-usable or do I need a new gasket? I thought in your video you removed a "metal" gasket and said you would be re-using it. Thanks for the assistance!! @@jetskijim007

It was used early on when the industry was young, and inexperienced users were sinking their ski's often. You pull the pin and it drains all the water out of the engine (after sinking)

You must buy an sx if your going to buy a 550 they were made from 1991 to 1995 if you see a 1990 sx it has the updated driveshaft and pump but still has the old piston port engine id avoid those unless your doing a engine swap or something like that

Great Video ! i'm an old Jet ski Mechanic from the 80's. Built a Bunch of 440's in my day. We used to punch them out to the Biggest 483. i Worked for Dana point Jet ski in California for many Years. started in about 1978. Worked on thousands of jet skis over the years. 440's & 550's. the old Black carbs - were Mikuni carbs. Factory carbs. very reliable. easy to rebuild. diaphragms inside. i Never dipped them in a carb cleaner that i can recall. they were about 32 mm. if i recall. We used to replace them with a Bigger Carb. from an articat snow mobile. carb. a Walbro 42-44 mm carb. it was a Nice Bump in Horsepower. We Built some of the Fastest Jet ski s of that era. 48 Mph. was the Fastest We built 483's to Run. stock compression on a 440 back then was about 135 psi. if memory serves. We used to Mill the Heads a lot. We used to get them up to about 165-180 if Mem. serves. Wiseco pistons. advanced the Timing. Ported intakes & exhaust. Dana Point Jet Ski Ruled back in the 80's. Ken Klus - Was the Owner Back then. i was Wrote up in the newspaper back then. i used to Run the Service Shop For him Back then. Those were some Great times ! Take care !

In those situations I drill a hole in the threaded shaft for a cotter pin and switch to a castle nut. I keep a supply of UHMD stock in my shop (otherwise know in some circles as SawSlick since its used on saw fences and sliding tables) and make up new flat washers, bushings etc from that material since its basically self lubricating. Works pretty good on kick-up sailboat rudders too. Have also used UHMD to machine parts for airtools that have become unobtanium. Best!
