Excellent lesson. However, you left me behind in the last segment when you built a key pattern based on minor thirds and suggested that we try improvised lines on the ll minor 7th of each of those keys. Maybe you could do a video on just that segment because that part of your instruction really left me behind.

its an EM7, should teach the Jazz scale, it's not really in D. Playing too fast on scales.
@frankdambra
@frankdambra 5 ай бұрын
A capital M means Major. So you mean Em7 or more commonly denoted e-7. In this video it is the 2 chord in a 251 progression in the key of D major. I've never heard of a Jazz Scale, but I have heard of a bebop scale which uses a chromatic passing tone to land chord tones on down beats (the exact concept this vid teaches!). The method I teach here is more in line with how creative Jazz musicians approach chromatic placement in the real world. Yes, they might use the bebop scale on occasion but if you ever transcribe you'll note that there isn't just one scale that's used for improvisation. However these principals I mention are everywhere. I'll try to slow down on future videos. Thanks!

Man, thanks for demistifying the "method to your madness" somewhat. That was really well done :). I am in awe of those chords😮. I don't know if I will be able to use "dissonance" to that extent for writing songs but man it's great! I agree with you when you say at the beginning that keep playing jazz but go "for your own sound" cause that's so "rare". Cheers dude 🙂

Incredible lesson, and in under 6 mins that will keep me practicing for a long time, thank you! You are a natural teacher and really should consider making more videos in this format. I appreciate the variations, advice, and examples. There are countless basic videos to explain upper structures to a beginner, which you wisely left out of this video to keep it succinct and digestible. That way viewers such as myself can refer back and watch it again and again while practicing. Cheers!

Are upper structures usually used as "structures" used in transition, resolving to a chord tone structure?
@frankdambra
@frankdambra 6 ай бұрын
You can think of the top triad voices moving to other tonalities. Like the D over C7 upper structure mutating into a C over F. Here I am just going to fourthy chords and not thinking about 'maintaining' the US spread so much.

Shared with myself to investigate further. Seriously though, I think it's important to understand *_general_* music theory first and then depart at the point where it comes to "studying the masters". All the true masters took what knowledge they had and did their own thing with it instead of trying to be another person. This is true in all of the arts... I have stopped being obsessed with the formulaic approach and just apply what I know to the music that I make in a way that pleases my ears. *That is who I am.*
@frankdambra
@frankdambra 6 ай бұрын
Totally. And this approach is not a replacement for studying the masters or writing that doesn’t fit this ‘formula’. It is however a useful guideline for someone to get their own lines going instead of spending years in books. Many beginners don’t know how to place chromatic tones in a linear sequence for instance. When you use this method you can target your favorite colors in a chord and create lines to bring them out in a rhythmically intelligible way. It is not a panacea for learning Jazz improvisation, but it is a tool that can give someone a lot of creative mileage. ✌🏻

Thank you so much for this. I was sorting through some old 78s the other week (California Bop stuff . . . lots of Dodo in there) and I was using KZfaq for quick reference as to what was on discs I was holding in my hands, when I came upon this video. For those who don't know, Dodo's Tone Paintings One is one of a couple of recordings of solo piano improvisations (perhaps formal compositions, actually) done on extremely primitive private recording equipment in the late 1940s that most people today would probably find very hard to listen to. But even under all the scratchiness, limited dynamic range, muffled treble and - most notably - the wildly drastic wow and flutter with spooky pitch fluctuations on the original, you can tell there was some real musical magic going on. Well, for sake of comparison, here's that actual vintage recording (it's on a Marmarosa compilation CD, along with a lot of more sonically palatable commercially released 78s of the day) . . . kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jcCqnKyS09zYZWQ.html I've given a lot of serious thought, Frank, of taking this flawed masterpiece off my CD, putting onto a computer and seeing if I could at least address the pitch fluctuations. But having a talented pianist patiently transcribing, performing and recording it? I hadn't really considered that. Thanks again for properly archiving this obscure piece of Jazz history for us.

@@profel.3487 You're welcome. That link I put in my first comment takes you to just this one track on that compilation CD, Dodo's Bounce. This link, below, takes you to the entire disc, which is a good basic introduction to Dodo's music . . . kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d7GihpBpzM7YdWw.html Dodo seemed to be everywhere (at least in the L.A. Bop scene) in the late 1940s. Most famously, he played on a pivotal Charlie Parker session for the Dial label, which also documented some marvelous piano work he did with trumpeter Howard McGhee and tenor saxophonist Teddy Edwards. The Hot Jazz 78s channel here on KZfaq gives us great visuals of the playing of many of these 78s while listening to the music . . . kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iL2Tipx4uLjXd2g.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r7aBZLR_mbaYpWg.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b7V9YNGFlaeynZs.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f6-IZaeDnbzbY6c.html And then, of course, you gotta hear Dodo's 1946 trio on the Atomic label with Mellow Mood . . . kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qdWTeZpzvqzWqqs.html Enjoy . . .

Insightful comments! I am just seeing them a year later. - The 'spooky pitch fluctuations' is definitely an aspect of the recording that pulled me in on top of the roving solo style and interesting harmonic bits.
