This video is a brief overview on Jazz line playing. Chord tones are placed on downbeats and other scale tones or chromatic neighbor tones are placed on up beats to guide the line to these chord tones.
This method is timeless and utilizes voice leading principles going back to the time of Bach and probably earlier. It can be utilized by anyone at any level of Jazz playing to creatively write and get new ideas into their playing.
Correction: When I count the phrase in to target the 'and' of 2 I actually started on the 'and' of 1. Experiment with the 'and' of 2 though! :)

Shared with myself to investigate further. Seriously though, I think it's important to understand *_general_* music theory first and then depart at the point where it comes to "studying the masters". All the true masters took what knowledge they had and did their own thing with it instead of trying to be another person. This is true in all of the arts... I have stopped being obsessed with the formulaic approach and just apply what I know to the music that I make in a way that pleases my ears. *That is who I am.*

Totally. And this approach is not a replacement for studying the masters or writing that doesn’t fit this ‘formula’. It is however a useful guideline for someone to get their own lines going instead of spending years in books. Many beginners don’t know how to place chromatic tones in a linear sequence for instance. When you use this method you can target your favorite colors in a chord and create lines to bring them out in a rhythmically intelligible way. It is not a panacea for learning Jazz improvisation, but it is a tool that can give someone a lot of creative mileage. ✌🏻

Excellent lesson. However, you left me behind in the last segment when you built a key pattern based on minor thirds and suggested that we try improvised lines on the ll minor 7th of each of those keys. Maybe you could do a video on just that segment because that part of your instruction really left me behind.

Im a beginner. I have jazz in my heart. I currently know how to play “Mary Had A Little Lamb” and I have no idea what you’re talking about, but it sounds good. 😅 Apparently, I have a LONG way to go.😢

its an EM7, should teach the Jazz scale, it's not really in D. Playing too fast on scales.

A capital M means Major. So you mean Em7 or more commonly denoted e-7. In this video it is the 2 chord in a 251 progression in the key of D major. I've never heard of a Jazz Scale, but I have heard of a bebop scale which uses a chromatic passing tone to land chord tones on down beats (the exact concept this vid teaches!). The method I teach here is more in line with how creative Jazz musicians approach chromatic placement in the real world. Yes, they might use the bebop scale on occasion but if you ever transcribe you'll note that there isn't just one scale that's used for improvisation. However these principals I mention are everywhere. I'll try to slow down on future videos. Thanks!

Your concept is correct but the lines don't sound good. Why? Rhythm I think. Thanks for the video!
