I think this town might surprise some Europeans, given its connection to both German Rappites and Scottish Owenites.

The town is New Harmony, a community founded in the early 19th century as a utopian settlement. Later in the 1820s it was purchased by Robert Owen who created a utopian community based on progressive ideals such as publicly funded education for men and women, and free public libraries. The utopian experiment was short-lived but influential.
@TheAntiqueNomadShorts15 күн бұрын
It surely was! I recall that we studied it in 5th grade, so it was interesting for me to "discover" it as an adult

@@TheAntiqueNomadShorts In America, the first few decades of the 19th century were a stew pot of utopianism, spiritualism, and eclectic Christian-based sects, some influenced by the Second Great Awakening.

First time I ever been to new Harmony is absolutely beautiful. Got to meet George made my day. Can’t wait till he comes to Petersburg, Indiana and it was a great show. I wish I’d looked a little deeper things around me, though that I regret next time I will take the time to look really good. I don’t know why I didn’t. I had all the time.😂

Thank you, George, we learn so much from you. It is very generous of you to share your knowledge. Question, We travel from WI to Western Tennessee a couple times a year. Do you have a recommendation for stops in Illinois, central or Southern Illinois?
@TheAntiqueNomadShorts23 күн бұрын
I like the Broadway Antique Market in Chicago (if you go that way), or the antique malls and flea market near the freeway in Springfield, Illinois...not sure what part of the state you're from in Wisconsin. New Harmony has a mall and shops all year round, and Evansville has Riverside Antique Mall. If you take Hwy. 641 south past Land Between the Lakes, Sturgis, Kentucky has a good antique mall; Twin Lakes Antique Mall in Gilbertsville (near the lakes) is where I sell and is very nice; Cadiz, Kenucky on I-24 has good shops; and Hazel, Kentucky on the Tennessee border is a fun antique town too

Where were these vases sold originally? Woolworths? Is so they would jave been very cheap. I was born in 1950, but I don't remember them from the old days. My mother and aunt both had good taste and though mom was the poor one raising us on her own, she had nice Japanese style decor items from small shops in San Francisco. Circa early 60s, I still have some of them.

Hi George! New Harmony seems lovely, and I love the architecture and colors of the buildings. Victorians used these muted but rich colors on the exteriors of their houses. Very quaint!
