@Haruhi5488 I apologize for not replying to you sooner. Your words were really comforting and I appreciate them a lot! I will try to change the little things like sleeping early/drinking more water (after I am done exams huhu) and trying more things being unafraid of failure. I wish you luck on your entrance exams and your journey in life 💗

For having spent countless of hours watching KZfaq, this is probably the 5th comment I've ever made and I just wanted to say that I really liked this video and message of yours. I have applied to the "top" schools in the US and UK from Sweden and during the process it has been interesting to read about all these high-achieving, but shallow, highschoolers. As EC's for university admission aren't really a thing in Sweden, it is obvious that everyone has been doing them, not because of passion, but for the sake of being more attractive to admissions officers. I am glad that I didn't think about applying internationally before last summer so I didn't risk shaping my life for it. Recently though, after having sent in all the applications, I have started experiencing feelings of shame. Shame in the sense that the main reason for applying is just that it is the "optimal path to success" - whatever that means - and to use the GPA I achieved. This sense of shame has got me thinking and now I am trying to begin the process of knowing what I want to do in life. Last September, I worked and lived at a vineyard in France which was an amazing experience and created strong bonds with the people I met. Even though they didn't have a lot of money, they were some of the happiest people I've met. Maybe that's one path of life to consider? I love hiking and have done several pretty intense trips but in a couple of months, me and a friend will attempt to hike through Europe (probably from north of the Netherlands to Italy), only sleeping in our tent and keeping food costs to a minimum (eat from food we find, could be from dumpsters or in cases of emergency; supermarkets). I will bring an empty notebook and a pen and brainstorm everyday, just filling pages with random notes and ideas, trying to come closer to knowing my purpose and what I want to do. Having said all this: If I get accepted to Harvard, best believe I'll see you there! Thank you for the video and sorry for all the rambling, good night.

bro… its okay. You can go to the next college, get into the honors program, and grind. Once you get out of college, no one cares what college you went to. You have the degree? Good, you get the job! It really is that simple in the real world.

Also, re. “finite” way of thinking - better way to describe it is materialistic. Ingrained pretty heavily in Chinese and other Asian cultures is the presence of tangible, visible symbols of accomplishment, and not the actual details of what those accomplishments mean

It shocks me that people are told to think about what college they want to go to in their FIRST YEAR of high school. I’m really lucky to have gone to a high school that actually cares about student well being and agency, where kids are urged to pursue their actual interests instead of being reminded about college goals every 5 seconds. And you might think that a hs with that kind of mindset would fail to get anyone into a good school, but that’s COMPLETELY FALSE. Most of my classmates got into top ranked colleges, because they actually cared about what they did in their life. (And maybe with some extra help from Asian parents) this is a school in hong kong

Not sure why this vid got recommended to me, but hey! Good message and happy to engage with this content so that it might reach all those who would benefit from hearing it. I got rejected from all my top choices, and ended up going to a local university. There, I was able to explore my desired area of research with great mentors who pushed me along the entire way, published a pair of articles, attended a pair of conferences and got a pair of awards. Now I am doing a fully funded PhD + fellowships in my top choice. It is not about the fame of the place you go, it is all about what want to do and actually doing it.

Great video, such an important topic. All young people should watch this video before getting blindly sucked into the pursuit of getting into the "best college" simply because it's what "everyone else does." College can of course be good if you've actually put thought into why you want to go to college and focus on genuine learning and not just studying for the sake of the exam or the gpa. The infinite game is also an important concept that I never thought about when I was back in HS/College, I usually hear about it in the context of business but it's even more relevant when it comes to schooling and education. As someone who studied hard, got the good grades, and has gotten into most people's dream school you have such a valuable perspective to offer and so many college students or rising college students would benefit from watching your videos.
