Almost unknown outside Australia, this cheerful farce was criticized for making the country look backward, being based on pre-WW1 days and ways. But audiences, especially in the bush, loved it and Bert Bailey- who got three-fifths of the profits- made a fortune and three sequels. Its takings beat all US and UK releases in 1932. Technically 'On Our Selection' is a remarkably accomplished film. Barely five years after talkies had come in, a Tasmanian engineer invented a sound system which enabled four-fifths of the shoot to occur on location. Compared with Hollywood's stilted works, Bailey and producer-director Ken Hall give this comedy a real indigenous air, and Hall's Cinesound company was able to keep Aussie features rolling off the production line until WW2 interrupted the flow. Quotas and tariff barriers frustrated export efforts, and Ealing's venture into Down Under production after the war was short-lived. Australia did not gain a permanent and substantial industry until the Seventies. But Hall's pioneering should be saluted and restored properly. Charles Chauvel was not the only voice crying in the wilderness before 'Picnic at Hanging Rock'.

What a shame these old Australian movies are not available and remastered to a better viewable quality the whole DAD/Steele Rudd movies were great and shows a whole different way of life and variation of humor and by gone era.

When he pulls the belt out of the stool after falling off is one of my favourite of his gags! Just the way he huffs and matter of factly throws out the two halves of the belt.

One of the most beautiful sound of rachmaninoff prelude in g minor, .... unfortunately the recording quality was very poor ..... Victor Borge touch on piano is so beautiful to enjoy, even though he was clowning most of the time but when he played seriously he produced one of the most enjoyable beautiful sound
