The players, that you mentioned are either dead, or retired. Get to know who the name players are in your town whether it’s Hooterville, or Nashville, get to know them, and take a Lesson or three if they’re teaching. Lots of the worlds best pickers teaching music camps during the summer. They can be expensive.

No doubt...lessons from "named players" are always a benefit...whether "paid" for or attained by "watching" them play "live". The "Live" lesson has the value of "Revealing the How-What & When" to play under "realtime" conditions...getting the opportunity to "hear & watch" a Master like Don Helms (Steel Guitarist with Hank Willams) feel "what needed" to be played behind the singer...and more importantly...what NOT to play behind the singer or within the song...invaluable "Live...on the spot" lessons. Additionally...the "Opportunity to Apply" what you have "learned" via a lesson under those "Live" conditions is undoubtedly as important for the "Complete Understanding" of "what" the lesson has to offer...full. Today...if a young players wants to "learn" Traditional Country Guitar i.e. the "twang" of Roy Nichols or Pete Anderson, the "Nashville Scene" doesn't offer this "style" of music with any frequency to be able to "apply your lesson" of playing Traditional Country Guitar. For me...I was extremely fortunate to be able to get those "Applicable Lessons" from so many LEGENDARY PICKERS...and then have the "Live" opportunity to try to apply "what" I heard and learned...and repeat this process...over and over and over. Nashville is INCREDIBLY DIFFERENT today...claiming to be the "Home of Country Music"...but the "Owners" of that home have moved out a long time ago. Thank you for your comment and my prayers to you, your family and friends...Sincerely I am...Dan;)

A question: Are many of these people trying to “make it” today playing because they love music so much or because it seems the best “get rich quick” scheme for them? It changes the atmosphere if it is one or the other. I don’t live there and don’t know.

The effect of less live music reverberates beyond just fewer places to play. Fewer places to interact and learn how music is accessible and how practice/paying attention can help one improve. Maybe we should consider establishing non-traditional venues where musicians come together not only for pay. The best music has always happened after hours anyway.

Very good commentary Brother. I completely agree that there’s nothing out there now that moves me. At around 11 years old I got to sit in with Bill Anderson. The principal at the school I attended was Jimmy Gateley’s brother. Jimmy was Bill’s guitar player and they came to our school for a little concert. What a thrill for a very guitar player. I got to sit in with Vern “the voice” in my late 20’s. I was in the house band at a place called The Lick Skillet Music Barn and the owner was friends with Vern. I had a brief encounter with Lee Greenwood but as a young man with 2 children traveling was out of the question so my career had been mostly local gospel groups and some studio work in North Alabama. Not what you would really call a career but I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. As an older man recovering from a brain tumor and two bouts with cancer I’m reduced to playing in my living room. Your content keeps me interested in the journey. Nashville has been dead for a while now. There’s a new guy or should I say new to me named Zac Top that’s playing good stuff but there doesn’t seem to be a future in making records with traditional music. Hopefully he can tour and draw crowds. For now I’ll stick to KZfaq and great folks like you for my entertainment. Thanks my friend

My Brother Rodney...I am so thankful for the time you spend with me here in this "Technical World" enjoying music together and sharing insight between us;) Mr. Gateley had a music store in Madison, Tennessee...a place I walked into during the exact same time period I am speaking of here in this video. I pulled that fiddle out and Jim grabbed a guitar as we picked in his store...and my father took a picture of this moment that I have somewhere in my scrap books;) Later...I would work with both Bill Anderson and Vern Gosdin (one of my favorites..."Chisled In Stone"...dang it...what a song written by Max D. Barnes I believe)...but again...having "access" to "Legends" because they were "still there" in Nashville. When it comes to "Music", I sincerely "Love It All"...as each genre offers "something musical" to me in some form. But...when it comes to "Classic Country"...those legendary songs sung by those Legends are the "Musical Threads" that dominate my "Musical Blanket" interwoven with major threads of Classic Rock, Texas Swing, Blues, MoTown...with a little Classical & Pop every now and then...and very little "New" or "Todays" Music. My Brother...we have the "Best Song Catalog in the World" to pick from and listen to...and I am glad we enjoy it together;) My prayers to you, your beautiful bride and your family and friends...Sincerely I am...Dan;)

Dan, I am so impressed, that at 12 you had opportunities to play on stage with well known musicians, and then to sit behind a drum kit for first time during a performance tells me you had quite the since of timing at such an early age. Like you said, compared to the Nashville scene today, it is hard to believe how much it has changed, now it looks like a Las Vegas spin off with all the party busses. In my mind, Nashville housing has skyrocketed, another obstacle in their way. Also we have loss many of the radio stations, where many a musician were first noticed, not to mention A.I., I fell like there are so many more obstacles in their way. This was an interesting Interesting topic, and I do agree with your point regarding the lack of legends to learn from. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Brother Mojo...thank you for your insight regarding Nashville today...and you are "spot on". I am thankful to have "experienced" all that I have prior to Nashville becoming "what" it is today...but for anyone who doesn't have that "reference point" such as a "new to Nashville guitarist", what they have to "navigate" regarding "Nashville's offerings" to become "successful" or at least "musically educated" is a whole "different" world...that now is "non-musical" to someone like me. But...I only "know" this thru experience. Thank you for watching...and my prayers to you, your family and friends...Sincerely I am...Dan;)

They were very approachable back then. God blessed me and my brother with the opportunity to work with some of the nicest people e.g. Melba Montgomery, Tommy Overstreet, Bobby G. Rice, Jack Green. We were part of the band "The Nashville Express". Gene Breeden on guitar, Duke Dumas on bass ( he was a great guitarist as well). Forgive me for name dropping, but that time with those entertainers and musicians was the highlight of my time exposed to Nashville. Thanks for sharing your early memories in Nashville .

Thank you for your kind words and for watching. Today, I will be recording a "S & T" about "Nashville's BIGGEST Problem: The Legends Are GONE!" featuring some detailed "insight" about how it was to be a "young" guitarist in Nashville back in the 80's & 90's & having "access" to "hear & see" Legendary guitar pickers whereas now...they simply are "gone"...and the few that remain are "inaccessable"...which is "Why" Young Nashville Guitarists have no "guidance" worth having...both "musically & business-wise". Brother Levi...thank you for the kind words and for watching;) The progression is a Bm to A to E repeating format with "alterations & additions" being made "spontaneously" over each chord at any moment...typically of my playing as I am always "searching" for that "little something different" within the "musical opportunities from "move to move". As the only "musical element" that is "looping" in this video is the actual "percussive beat" you hear, the "chordal moves" allowed me to "search" thru every "pass" of the movement..even to the point a playing a "B Major" (by accident) for just literally a "moment" over this "Minor feeling" groove. All this to say...just having fun searching thru the vast musical opportunities that are found within even a 3 chord movement & a "groove". And...if I were to "pick" the most important element of doing this...playing to a "beat" is right at the very top as this "makes your mind & your fingers" perform to a "defined rhythm"...and therefore..."executing a musical move" within an appropriate, defined "timeframe" of music. Once you get that certain phrase "under your fingers" and into the "Musical Library of Your Mind", then you can adjust "how" you perform it regarding "feel and tempo";) Thank you again for watching...and my prayers to you, your family and friends...Sincerely I am...Dan;)

Brother Bri...I figured your guitar had a "story"...and my Brother...you "nailed it" with both the build and the sonic results as it is a fine sounding Strat that has the "Cool Factor";) Over the last handful of years, I have been getting much more "hands on" with my instruments as, although we live in the Nashville, Tennessee area and have access to "world-class" guitar experts and luthiers such as the fine folks at Gruhn Guitar and Glaser Instruments, we are in our Florida Keys home for the majority of the year and where I play the vast majority of my "Live" performance...and there simply is nobody down here that I trust to "work" on one of my instruments. This has "made" me learn so much more about these guitars than just playing them...and I've become pretty good at both "setup" and electrical repair/installation opporutinities. Brother Bri...you just may have to open up "Improv Jam' Guitar Service";) Thank you for sharing the information on your very special guitar...I sincerely "understand" it's extreme value...a price that no money could ever buy.
