Quite shocked how well this worked as I thought it would only be useful for landscape with its low complexity. However, I was able to extend a poorly cropped shot of my friend with the British Parliament buildings behind her. Thanks!!

The only issue is I found is using a screenshot gives you a very low res photo. In my case, about 865kb. Instead, I exported my processed NEF file as a proper jpg (eg 9meg) and opened it up in paint. I was able to expand the white background on the one edge requiring filling. I then reimported the modified file and used the same process described by you. The only difference is that it had a white background instead of your grey. The same process worked great and now I have a high res file to boot.

@SignatureEdits18 сағат бұрын
All depends what you're trying to do! For sharing on social media, this method is 100% A-Okay :) But if you're printing a 36 inch canvas, sure, photoshop will work better for you! You can always resize the jpg so that the generated file is larger too :)
@Digit0wL18 сағат бұрын
@SignatureEdits of course, nowadays everyone is on their phone so yeah your point make sense lol!! Maybe it's just me but I find that generative ai and the remove tool are much more performant on photoshop than on LR.

The resolution of a screenshot is not anywhere close to the resolution of even a 24 MP sensor let a loan a higher MP sensor. You're going to end up with tiny unprintable pics only good for online viewing.
@SignatureEditsКүн бұрын
Hi Mark! Actually the workaround is super easy. You can screenshot the image like this and upscale the resolution before importing back into lightroom. Takes 5 secs in preview on a mac. Ofc the resolution of your screen will make a big difference in how high res the initial screenshot is, and there are definitely limitations there. On my retina mac I'm finding it more than enough, but I don't normally print my work, only share online!
@artdawggy5 сағат бұрын
@@SignatureEdits Sorry but if you believe that an upscaled screenshot will have the same resolution as an image from 24mp sensor then I'm not sure what to say. Yes this would be great for Facebook or Instagram but nothing else.

Wow, really going outside the box, so woiuldn't work n an exported JPeg, because one needs the space for generative fill?
@SignatureEditsКүн бұрын
Thanks! Yes it would work, but you would need to take a screenshot of the exported jpg to extend the frame beyond just the image... Generative AI in lightroom only works within the frame of the photo, so that's the trick that let's you work "outside" of your image to expand the shot!
@paulm8157Күн бұрын
Intriguing post, Ryan. Will have to give this a try, just for fun, if nothing else. So, the image resolution of the Gen AI fill is less than the resolution for the rest of the pic? When exporting, what resolution applies? Can new pic be upscaled? BTW, general Q for you about pinned YT comments: noticed that your own pinned comment has a love icon - viewers can’t do that, I understand, so you “love” your own comment? Kinda brash😊,
@SignatureEditsКүн бұрын
Hey Paul! So the resolution of the new photo is going to be whatever the size of the screenshot is you upload into lightroom. BUT you can easily fix this by opening the screenshot and resizing it before importing into lightroom... In theory, you could actually use this method to create a HIGHER res file from your original photo (or w/e res you want) On a mac it's super easy - Open the screenshot in preview, then go to tools > resize and select your preferred resolution. And yeah, YT algorithm is weird and goes by how much engagement a post has. If there isn't a pinned comment, you get docked. If there isn't a hearted comment, you get docked... So even though it makes zero sense, I generally just do it on my comment when I first post the video to please the YT overlords 😅

Very clever. What a Fantastic workaround and Hack Ryan. Its like its big brother Photoshop but is only useful for screen or photos for social media, which is great. As long as you dont try printing. If you want to print there are a couple of guys on YT offerring a free workaround to get better resolution, so I`d probably go that route. But clearly if youve found this, it cant be long before Adobe will pick up on it and include it soon in an update. Cheers Ryan love your stuff.

@@CrawfordHeisz Interestingly enough, edits like this have been going on for decades... It's just that they were done by photoshop artists for campaigns with big budgets and took hours per photo to pull off. AI isn't doing anything new here... It's just making that process extremely easy, fast & available to everyone. So ironically enough, the hot topic debate is over AI... when really at it's core, it's the same debate since photoshop first came out :)

Boooooo generative ai is burning the world. It uses so much energy!!!
@SignatureEdits2 күн бұрын
You're not wrong that AI uses a lot of energy! That said, the USA first computer the ENIAC, weighing 30 tons, used 200 KILOWATTS of electric power and contained over 18,000 vacuum tubes, 1,500 relays, and hundreds of thousands of resistors, capacitors, and inductors. All this for less compute than you get today from a dollar store calculator. So yes, all technology is massively energy dependent at first, and either grows in efficiency over time, or is abandoned for more efficient technology that replaces it. The whole reason we use machines at ALL is because by their nature, they allow us to do more with less... Not to discount the many valid criticisms of AI, but I like to think like an optimist and search for the good where possible. After all - AI is here and will continue to become more and more of a player in every arena, whether we like it or not.

Maybe it's faster because it's working with a smaller file, but I don't really know if file size is relevant for AI stuff
