The old spots you are finding going into the gelcoat look like blisters having been removed and filled
@sailingaquamarie1708

I guess that's possible - they may have been blisters, but i don't think they were ever filled. They were down to the fiberglass and painted over only with antifoul bottom paint. But, you may be right - perhaps there was a layer of unthickened epoxy on them acting as barrier coat and I just couldn't tell.

Many thanks for informative video! I have used VC17 Extra in seawater for the last 20 years - works ok on the West Coast of Norway. However, it is now removed from the marked, as it contains a component that is forbidden from 2024 in Europe. So I need to do some work "down under" on my Sun Fast 37 :-(.

Great video and attention to detail. I had my boat sandblasted just before the Canadian winter and will do the same job in the spring. I had understood the recommendation was to get all of the interprotect coats on in one go, waiting in between coats until it was tacky but did not come off on your finger tips. Seems you did it over a couple of weekends. Did you have to sand in between?

Interprotect 2000E has an overcoat max time of 6 months when overcoating with itself. It's a matter of hours with the thumbprint test for something like Micron CSC. The 2 inch cockpit drains are wise. Might consider putting a portable fridge-freezer or 2 in the storage closet across from the head, which would allow modifying the old ice box into the expanded galley area you desire. If you do extended cruising you will want two full size berths in the main cabin, one for each tack. There is a table that starts will an L that bolts on and is removable and with a second mount in the cockpit. James Baldwin uses them. Nice job on the outboard installation - keeps the petroleum smell out of the boat.

I appreciate the feedback - thanks. I already have a table with the offset mounting for the saloon, but I'm not fond of it. It works well for the occasional meal, but sitting at it with a laptop for hours would be tedious. If I were to put in a table as I describe in the video, I'd make sure it drops to a settee. Also, if i were to get rid of the closet I would still have the settee on that side as well, it would just be moved forward about 18 inches, so I'd still have settees on both sides for offshore. I hadn't thought of using the closet space for fridge/freezer though - I'll look into that. Thanks!

@@dgpratt You might want to pounce pumice in the wet paint and give it a top coat with Perfection (which I found no better than my usual oil paint). Pumice is cheap. Did I tell you about 3M silver tape 225 which can be left on for weeks and still come up easily? Beware, though, at it’s price-about $100 a roll, it is hard to find and has a shelf life. I haven’t found any paint that really lasts on a deck.

I don't see why you spent all that money on fairing compound. Because I don't think the fish would have complained about it. And the fish would have been the only ones to see it. Once it was in the water, it would not have affected performance.
@sailingaquamarie1708
@sailingaquamarie1708 Жыл бұрын
Fairing compound isn't all that expensive. Plus if I ever were to sell the boat, I'm sure a potential buyer would look at it as poor craftsmanship and wonder about the quality of the rest of the work. It's plenty visible to all when up on the hard. I had the time and opportunity, so I did it. If I were paying money at a boatyard and anxious to get it back in the water, then I'd probably wouldn't have bothered.

Yep, removing VC-17 is a pain. I am currently removing it from my Sonar. When I got the old Sonar, it needed a new bottom job. I sanded, ground out cracks, and filled and faired. Then I put on 4 coats of Interlux Interprotect. Then I put on the VC-17. Unfortunately I was in a hurry and did not realize how much orange peel I would have. I added another coat of VC-17 the next year. This year I decided to remove the VC and the orange peel. Best way I've found is an air driven inline sander with 80 grit paper. It is heavy but by spreading the work out over several days and only working an hour or two at a time, I've been able to get most of it off. Good luck. Take breaks.

Kiwigrip is great stuff, it is very tough too. Yes it does get dirty and hold dirt. Soap and water fixes that , lol. I recently made new counter tops for our boat. I epoxy sealed them and applied kiwigrip as the finished surface. Not coasre texture , but a very smooth low texture surface achieved with a normal low nap roller. It looks great! Same type of texture you could get from Formica.

The barrier coat primer is intended to be thick and the seal the hull from water intrusion. It can be used topside, I have done it. It is hard to sand if you want a smooth finish but great for under coating bottom paint. Slop it on thick and heavy and it is a great product.

I am painting our this week too, under a tarp like yours. Lots of heat and humidity here. Interlux oyster white is what I am using, looks like the same color you are using. I am almost 60yrs old, I feel sore today. I have to break the deck and cockpit up into three sections to paint. Like you said, kiwigrip hides a lot of stuff. I am running low on paint and it always seems hard to get the color I am using , so I decided to tripple prime the areas under the kiwigrip and save the oyster white for the parts that show. I don't mind a less than perfect finish,orange peel is our friend, lol. An old guy with a big steel boat told me once, 80% is 100% for a boat that sits in the water. Your boat looks great!

I have an Albert 35 with a Yanmar 3gm30f. I ‘m one of those guys who watches every Baldwin video and read his books so I’m familiar with the iconversion he does. I think you hit it right: the outboard thing is great IF you are committed to sailing everywhere an just getting in and out of harbors with an engine. I’m on the Chesapeake; lots of light air here and I turn the engine on. I think you are going to want something more than an outboard and if electric is a no go then I’d keep what you’ve got, get the transmission fixed and do the conversion to heat exchanger

You can just have a bronze sleeve made or find a bronze sleeve that fits your new “pin” size, drill out the shoe hole and have the bronze sleeve welded in. Should be good as new.
@capngwyn

I put this on Facebook and I'll repeat it here. If the brass you can see looks OK, the brass you can't see will be better. At least that was the case for my rudder. If it's just the pin, then drill and tap and replace, like you say. The hole in the shoe can be replaced with a bushing. Or welded and re-drilled.

He attributes the breakage to the boat having struck something. Significantly, he also says he felt no impact, and it was more of a gradual release when it happened. Later he also notes the pink color of the bronze in his rudder shaft. Pink means that the bronze has dealloyed, and that makes it weak. Likely, the first part of the bronze rudder 'backbone' that would break would be the join at the shaft. This is where the thinner threaded rod which extends out into the blade is stressed highest by forces acting on the rudder. That the shaft turns but it does not deflect the rudder, shows us that this is where the breakage is located. So we know he had a weakened rudder structure, and the boat had a ton of weather helm. The stress from weather helm on a weak component would have been exacerbated by nonstop travel and usage over thousands of miles of seas. Given the above, I think it more likely his rudder structure broke because of stress over time, not because of an impact he didn't even feel or hear. WRT peeling the skin off of your rudder, if it were me, I would give it a good tap test with a hammer every inch or so all across the face of the rudder and especially near the shaft, listening for a 'dead' sound, a thunk that indicates water intrusion. *If* I heard an off sound like that, and only if, would I then go in for the elective, exploratory surgery. Otherwise, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. :)

D, if the bronze casting on the bottom is in good shape I would see about using a bushing. If it is bronze I'm not sure you could weld it. For a bushing over drill the casting if you can and put a bushing in there that your pin will fit in. I believe there are bronze bushings out there.

@@sailingaquamarie1708 I would think the one benefit of a bushing is they are relatively inexpensive and you could keep several on hand and it could be a part of routine inspection and maintenance (like zincs). If the bushing is going you drop the casting off and pull/chisel out the old one and put in a new one. At least the bushing is sacrificial rather than the casting.
